BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The car is the most convenient way to explore Sithonia, where many beaches and coves can be reached only by detours off the main road. From Thessaloniki, it takes about two hours by car, depending on traffic and the destination chosen. The roads are often winding and can be busy in summer: drive carefully and allow extra time for getting around. KTEL buses connect Thessaloniki with some locations on the peninsula, but frequencies and routes vary by season, so check the timetables before setting off. In peak season, arrive early at the most popular beaches to find parking.

When to Go

The best time for the sea is generally from June to September, when the days are warm and tourist services are open. July and August offer the most summery weather, but they are also the busiest and hottest months. June and September are often a good compromise: the beaches are quieter and temperatures remain pleasant, even if some services may have reduced hours. In spring and autumn, the landscape is pleasant for walks and hikes, but the weather is less suitable for swimming.

Where to Eat

In the coastal towns and inland villages you’ll find Greek tavernas, often family-run, as well as cafés and seaside restaurants. Try fish and seafood, grilled dishes, salads, and specialties made with local ingredients; for the catch of the day, ask the price before ordering. The busiest areas offer a wide choice, while in smaller centers it’s worth checking opening hours in advance, especially outside peak season. For a quiet summer dinner, book ahead or arrive before the rush.

Quick tips

  1. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat: many beaches are exposed to the sun and not all have natural shade.
  2. Keep cash with you for small purchases and parking; card payment availability may vary.
  3. Check sea conditions and local guidance before swimming or going out by boat.
  4. Leave the beaches clean and do not light fires: during summer, the risk of wildfires can be high.
