THE PLACES THAT TELL ZANTE

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

The famous shipwreck bay is framed by towering white cliffs and can be reached by sea; its viewpoint offers a spectacular view from above. Access to the beach may be subject to restrictions.

On the northeast coast, these sea caves are famous for the blue reflections created by the light on the water. They are usually visited by boat, often with stops for swimming.

The dot a rugged coastline of sea stacks and clear waters, perfect to explore by boat. Excursions generally depart from the nearby port of Limni Keriou.

A small islet linked to the coast by a walkway, recognizable for its scenic jetty and suspended white sails. It is an atmospheric stop near Laganas.

This long sandy beach lies within Zante National Marine Park and is an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. Activities and access times are regulated to protect the habitat.

Solomos Square

In the heart of the capital, the square is surrounded by neoclassical buildings and overlooks the port. It is an ideal spot for a stroll and for visiting the nearby Byzantine Museum of Zante.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The KTEL bus network connects the city of Zakynthos with some tourist areas, but routes and frequencies can be limited, especially outside summer. To explore beaches and villages more freely, you can rent a car or scooter; be sure to check the vehicle’s condition and insurance coverage carefully. Side roads can be narrow and winding: drive cautiously and always wear a helmet on a scooter. Taxis and private transfers are useful for short trips, while many bays can only be reached by boat.

When to go

From May to June and from September to early October, the climate is pleasant and the island is generally less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August bring hot days and lively beach life, but also more visitors and often higher prices. In spring and autumn, some activities and connections may have reduced hours: check in advance, especially if you want to visit beaches or less-frequented areas.

Where to eat

In Zakynthos Town and the inland villages, you’ll find tavernas serving Greek cuisine and local specialties, such as ladotyri cheese and meat- or fish-based dishes. For a simple meal, try the pizzerias and small spots serving souvlaki and meze. In the beach areas, the choice is wide, but prices can vary: ask for the menu before ordering and, if you’re looking for a more traditional atmosphere, head to the inland villages.

Quick tips

  1. In high season, book accommodation and rental cars well in advance, especially if you’re traveling in July or August.
  2. Bring reef shoes: some beaches have pebbles or uneven seabeds.
  3. To visit the sea turtle nesting areas, respect the signs and local guidance; do not approach the nests or disturb the animals.
  4. Check ferry schedules and sea conditions before planning boat trips: they can change depending on the weather.
