Guide to Zante
ZANTE · ITINERARY

Zante (Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece) in 7 days – Complete itinerary

7 days / 6 nights · Sea, nature, villages, archaeology

The itinerary begins in Zante Town and continues by area: first the Vasilikos peninsula and Laganas Bay, then the rocky landscapes of the southwest and the scenic spots of the north. The day dedicated to Navagio includes the viewpoint, not the descent to the beach, whose access may be prohibited or restricted for safety reasons. To reach the more remote beaches and villages, a rental car is recommended; for Keri and the Blue Caves, boat excursions are used instead, depending on the weather. Opening hours, access and fees may vary depending on the season.

10:00–20:30 Urban walks and a moderate climb

Discover the old town, the main cultural sights, and the view from the hill.

10:00

Solomos Square

Start from the central square, overlooking the harbor and surrounded by neoclassical buildings rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. Allow about 30–45 minutes to get your bearings along the waterfront and nearby pedestrian streets.

The walk is free; bring water during the hottest hours.

11:00

Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos

Visit the collections of icons, frescoes, and religious works from the island’s churches. Allow about an hour, and check opening times on site, as they may change between high and low season.

Indicative admission: €4–€8.

12:30

Lunch in the old town

Choose a taverna between the center and the harbor to sample Ionian dishes, Greek salad, and local cheeses. A simple lunch costs around €12–€22 per person, excluding drinks.

In summer, it’s best to book ahead or have lunch before 13:30.

14:00

Agios Dionysios Church

Walk to the church dedicated to the island’s patron saint and admire the iconostasis and decorated interior. Dress respectfully and check that no services are taking place during your visit.

Admission is generally free; any donations are optional.

16:30

Venetian Castle of Zakynthos and Strani Hill

Take a taxi or drive up to Bohali Hill, where the Venetian fortifications are set amid greenery. Continue on to Strani Hill for views over the city and the Ionian Sea, leaving enough time to head back down before sunset.

Allow 10–15 minutes from the center; castle access and ticketing may vary.

Day 2 – Beaches and landscapes of the Vasilikos peninsula

09:00–18:30 Beach day with short transfers

Explore the Vasilikos coast while respecting the protected turtle nesting areas.

09:00

Departure for Vasilikos

Pick up the car or take a taxi and follow the coastal road southeast, allowing about 30–40 minutes from town. In high season, set off early: parking and beach access fill up quickly.

Indicative car rental: €35–€75 per day, varying by season and coverage.

09:45

Gerakas Beach

Spend the morning at this long sandy beach, part of the protected area of Zakynthos Marine National Park. Follow the marked paths and do not stand on the egg-laying zones, especially during nesting periods.

Access may be restricted at certain times; no umbrellas in the protected areas.

12:00

Lunch in Vasilikos

Stop at a village taverna or along the road for a meal of vegetables, fish, or souvlaki. Budget around €12–€25 per person and ask whether fresh fish is available that day.

Do not leave litter on the beach or in natural areas.

13:30

Dafni Beach

Reach Dafni by following the inland road, which can be narrow and rough on the final stretch. The beach lies within the protected area: follow local signs and keep your distance from nests and turtles.

Check accessibility and facilities before setting off; conditions may change.

16:00

Banana Beach and Porto Zoro Beach

Finish with a swim at more developed Banana Beach, then make a short stop at Porto Zoro to admire the exposed rocks. An umbrella and sun loungers may cost about €15–€30 per pair, depending on the area and season.

Return before dark: some side roads are poorly lit.

Day 3 – Keri, sea caves and Marathonisi

08:30–19:00 Boat trip and scenic stops

See the Keri caves and the coastline of Laganas Bay without disturbing marine life.

08:30

Transfer to Limni Keriou

Reach the small harbor of Limni Keriou in about 35–45 minutes by car from town. Arrive early to confirm departure and choose a boat suited to sea conditions.

Indicative shared excursion: €25–€50 per person; fuel and parking may affect the cost.

09:30

Sail to the Keri Caves

The boat follows limestone cliffs and sea caves, where the light can take on turquoise hues. Swimming stops depend on the sea, wind, and type of tour; do not enter caves if the crew advises against it.

Bring a mask, reef shoes, and environmentally friendly sunscreen.

12:00

Marathonisi

Make a stop on the island, known as Turtle Island, following the crew’s and marine park’s instructions to the letter. Nesting areas may be off-limits: avoid walking on the dunes and do not approach the turtles.

Landings and time on the island may be limited, especially during the breeding season.

14:00

Lunch in Limni Keriou

Head back to the port and have lunch at a seaside taverna, or choose a light meal before getting back on the boat. Expect to spend approximately €12–€25 per person.

Keep cash on hand for small businesses and parking.

17:00

Keri Lighthouse

Drive to the viewpoint near the lighthouse to admire the cliffs and the open sea. The final stretch can be busy at sunset: park only in designated spaces and do not cross barriers or unstable edges.

The view is free; dinner or a drink at the viewpoint comes at varying prices.

Day 4 – The western coast and inland villages

09:00–20:00 Scenic drive with short stops

Alternate rocky coves, traditional villages, and views over the western cliffs.

09:00

Departure for Porto Limnionas

From Zante Town, you can reach the west coast in about 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic. The roads are scenic but winding: drive carefully and don’t rely on overly optimistic navigation times.

It’s best to have reef shoes: access to the sea is rocky.

10:00

Porto Limnionas

Head down to the bay to swim among the rocks and crystal-clear water, if the sea is calm. This is not a sandy beach and getting into the water can be challenging; avoid diving from unauthorized spots.

Sunbeds and refreshments, if available, are chargeable and seasonal.

12:30

Lunch and stop at Porto Roxa

Continue along the coast to Porto Roxa, where you can stop for lunch and take in the sea from the rocky platforms. Services are limited outside peak season; expect a meal to cost around €15–€28 per person.

Check the waves before entering the water.

15:30

Exo Chora

Take a short detour inland to stroll through the village and see the famous ancient olive tree near the square. Respect private property and olive groves; a stop of 30–45 minutes is enough.

Buy olive oil or local products only from authorized businesses.

18:00

Kampi at sunset

Make your way to the Kampi viewpoint for views over the high western cliffs and the sunset. Arrive early and stay in safe areas: the ground near the edge can be loose.

Dinner in the area: around €18–€35 per person.

Day 5 – Navagio, Anafonitria and the northwestern villages

08:30–19:00 Scenic drive day

Visit the shipwreck viewpoint and get to know the northern interior without attempting unauthorized access.

08:30

Departure for the Navagio viewpoint

Leave the city early and reach the viewpoint area in about 60–75 minutes. Access rules can change at the last minute too: follow only official signs and directions.

Do not go down to the beach and do not cross any barriers or fences.

10:00

Navagio Viewpoint

Take in the shipwreck bay from above, one of the island’s most famous views, and be prepared for a short wait if the area is crowded. Navagio Beach may be off-limits, and boat tours do not guarantee landing.

Access to the viewpoint is subject to ordinances and safety conditions.

12:00

Anafonitria Monastery

Continue to the monastery, set in the interior, and visit the accessible areas discreetly. Check opening hours and wear appropriate clothing for places of worship.

Admission is generally free or by donation; opening hours are not always continuous.

13:30

Lunch in Volimes

Stop in Volimes for a break at a taverna and to browse small craft shops. Lunch costs roughly €12–€25 per person; some places may be closed in the off-season.

Ask where the local products come from before buying them.

16:00

Askos Stone Park

Spend the afternoon at the park, which combines trails, Mediterranean vegetation, and animals. Before you go, check opening days and hours, as the activity is seasonal and may require a ticket.

Approximate admission: €8–€15; bring water and closed-toe shoes.

Day 6 – Northeastern coast and Blue Caves

08:30–18:30 Beaches, boat, and coastal views

Explore the coast of Xigia and Makris Gialos and reach the Blue Caves on an authorized excursion.

08:30

Departure for Xigia

Leave town heading northeast: the trip to Xigia usually takes about 35–45 minutes. Bring water and check sea conditions before heading down, as access to the beach is steep.

Parking can be limited; do not leave valuables in the car.

09:30

Xigia Beach

Stop for a swim in the small cove, known for its sulfur springs and distinctive smell. The beach is narrow and can get crowded; avoid applying products that could contaminate the water before swimming.

Rock shoes are useful; follow the posted instructions on site.

11:30

Makris Gialos Beach

Continue for a stop on the pebble beach, prized for its clear water. You can swim or simply relax; loungers and umbrellas, if available, have seasonal rates.

Do not leave litter and bring your snorkeling gear with you.

13:30

Lunch at Agios Nikolaos Port

Reach the port of Agios Nikolaos and choose a seaside taverna. It’s also the starting point for several excursions to the Blue Caves; compare duration, boat type, and swimming opportunities before buying.

Indicative boat tour: €20–€45 per person.

15:00

Blue Caves

Sail along the coast of Cape Skinari to admire arches and sea cavities, especially striking in favorable light. Swimming stops depend on sea conditions and safety: always follow the crew’s instructions.

Book ahead during peak months and bring protection for water-sensitive belongings.

Day 7 – Laganas Bay and the final hours at the sea

09:00–18:00 Coastal relaxation and short transfers

End the trip with an easy day between the beach, the port, and protected areas in the south.

09:00

Laganas Beach

Head to the long bay beach, easily accessible from the tourist area. The bay is part of the protected area of the Marine National Park: respect boundaries, schedules, and turtle-related restrictions.

Do not approach the animals and do not use motorboats in prohibited zones.

11:30

Cameo Island

Walk along the footbridge to the islet and check opening hours in advance, as access can be seasonal and subject to an entry fee. The visit is brief and offers views over the bay; there’s no need to stay long.

Indicative admission: €5–€10; check access conditions on the day.

13:00

Lunch in Laganas

Choose a venue away from the busiest stretch of the main road for a relaxed meal. The estimated cost is €12–€25 per person, depending on dishes and drinks.

If you have a flight or ferry on the same day, check transfer times in advance.

14:30

Kalamaki Beach

End with a walk or a swim in Kalamaki, part of the same protected bay and close to the airport. Stay within the marked areas and follow the seasonal access rules, avoiding any disturbance to wildlife.

Restrictions may include evening closures or limited access.

17:00

Return and departure buffer

Head back to town, return the car or reach your accommodation with enough time to spare. If you still have time, buy local products in shops in the centre, comparing prices and origin.

Taxi from the Laganas area to town: about €20–€35, depending on time of day and season.

Practical tips

  • In high season, book accommodation, a car, and excursions in advance; for boat trips, check the sea conditions the evening before.
  • For the protected beaches of Gerakas, Dafni, Laganas, and Kalamaki, always respect the boundaries and rules of the Marine National Park.
  • Bring reef shoes, water, a hat, and sunscreen: many coves are rocky and offer little shade.
  • For Navagio, check the official instructions on the day and do not cross barriers: access to the viewpoint and boat trips may be subject to restrictions.
