Day 1 – Zakynthos Town: churches, squares and views

09:30–21:00 Easy walks

Discover the historic center on foot and end the day at the Bochali viewpoint.

09:30

Church of Agios Dionysios

Start at the church dedicated to the island’s patron saint, near the port, and admire the iconostasis and richly decorated interiors. Admission is generally free, but a small donation is appreciated; dress respectfully.

Religious services may limit tourist visits.

10:45

Walk to Solomos Square

Reach the heart of the city on foot in about 10–15 minutes, passing through the central streets rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. In the square, take time to admire the neoclassical buildings and the rhythm of local life; the walk is free.

The center is easy to explore without a car.

11:15

Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos

Set aside about an hour for the icons, frescoes, and religious works from churches across the island, many of which were damaged by the earthquake. Admission may cost around €5–€10; check opening hours and prices for the day, especially outside peak season.

A good shelter during the hottest hours.

12:45

Lunch in the historic center

Choose a taverna between the square and the seafront to try local dishes like sofrito or the catch of the day. Expect around €15–€25 per person for a simple lunch, drinks excluded or limited.

Ask the price of the fish by weight before ordering it.

15:00

Seafront and port of Zakynthos

Stroll along the waterfront to see the harbor, the boats, and the line of cafés and shops. This stop is free and flexible: allow 45–60 minutes, or linger for a coffee for about €3–€5.

If you have luggage, keep in mind that some parts of the seafront are exposed to the sun.

18:00

Bochali at sunset

Reach Bochali with an uphill walk of about 20–30 minutes or by taxi in a few minutes; from the neighborhood you’ll get lovely views over the rooftops and the bay. Access to the viewpoint is free; a dinner or aperitif nearby can cost roughly €20–€35 per person.

Wear comfortable shoes if you walk up and check the sunset time.

Day 2 – Northwestern coast: caves and Navagio

07:30–18:30 An intense day by car and boat

Admire the northern coast from the sea and from scenic viewpoints, without assuming access to Navagio beach.

07:30

Departure from Zakynthos Town

Have breakfast and set off by car toward Agios Nikolaos, in the northeast of the island: allow about 50–60 minutes, depending on traffic and roads. Daily rental can range roughly from €35 to €70, plus fuel and insurance coverage.

Refuel the car in town or along the main road.

08:45

Boarding and cruise to the Blue Caves

From Agios Nikolaos, choose a cruise that includes the caves and clearly specifies the itinerary and any stops. A half-day trip can cost around €25–€45 per person; duration and route depend on the sea and the type of boat.

Bring sunscreen, water, and a light jacket for the spray.

09:15

Blue Caves

From the boat, take in the contrast between the pale rock and the blue reflection of the water; some boats enter the caverns only if the sea allows it. Avoid jumping in without the crew’s permission, and note that the visit is included in the cruise fare.

A waterproof case is useful for your phone and camera.

11:00

Navagio Beach from the sea

If the excursion includes it, admire the bay and the shipwreck from the sea, following the crew’s instructions. Shore access may be prohibited or altered for safety reasons: check the official regulations and do not assume disembarkation is guaranteed.

Check the boat’s schedule before buying your ticket.

13:30

Lunch in Agios Nikolaos

Return to the port and stop at a seaside taverna or pack a snack to eat before setting off again. For an informal meal, expect around €15–€25 per person; leave some room for possible cruise delays.

In high season, it is wise to book ahead or arrive early.

15:00

Navagio viewpoint

Drive to the panoramic spot on the west coast, allowing around 45–60 minutes from the port. Follow the barriers and signs on site: access to the edge and trails may be restricted for safety, and viewing should only be done from authorized areas.

Do not cross fences or ignore warning signs, even to take photos.

16:15

Monastery of St. George at Anafonitria

Stop in the village of Anafonitria to visit the monastery, appreciating its intimate atmosphere and traditional architecture. Admission is usually free or by donation; respect the posted opening hours and allow 30–45 minutes for the visit.

Modest clothing and respectful behavior are essential.

17:00

Return to Zakynthos town

Head back to town, with an estimated journey of about an hour, plus any stops. For dinner, budget around €20–€35 per person, depending on the venue and drinks.

The inland roads are winding: avoid driving in a hurry.

Day 3 – South of the island: turtles, bays and Keri

08:30–20:30 Sea and short transfers

Explore the protected southern area with responsible excursions and end the day facing the panorama of Keri.

08:30

Transfer to Agios Sostis

From Zakynthos town, reach Agios Sostis in about 20–25 minutes by car. If you do not have a car, taxi or private transfer may cost roughly €20–€35 each way, depending on the time and season.

Alternatively, check seasonal buses before planning your day.

09:00

Cameo Island

Cross the pedestrian bridge and visit the islet, famous for its small bay and coastal scenery. Entry, if required, may cost roughly €5–€10; accessibility and opening depend on the season and sea conditions.

Ask on site whether the ticket includes services or beach access.

10:30

Departure from Agios Sostis

Book a boat or an excursion with a stop at Marathonisi and in the bays of the area. A shared tour can cost around €20–€40 per person, while private hire is more expensive; duration and itinerary vary.

Make sure the operator complies with the rules of the Marine National Park.

11:00

Marathonisi

Admire the island known as Turtle Island and its beaches without approaching the nests or disturbing the wildlife. The accessible areas and the length of the stop are regulated: follow the guide’s instructions and do not leave any litter.

Bring water and shade: facilities on the island are limited.

13:30

Lunch and a break in Limni Keri

Return to the coast and have lunch at a taverna in Limni Keri, with the option of choosing seafood dishes or Greek specialties. Allow around €15–€30 per person and spend the early afternoon taking a break in the shade or swimming in a permitted area.

Respect any swimming restrictions and the rules of the protected area.

17:30

Keri Lighthouse

Drive to the Keri viewpoint, about 20–25 minutes from Limni Keri, to look out over the cliffs and the open sea. Access to the outside area is free; for a drink or dinner at the nearby venues, budget around €20–€35 per person.

Arrive early to find parking and choose a safe spot away from the edge.

19:30

Return to Zakynthos Town

Head back to town in about 35–45 minutes, taking into account the hilly road and evening traffic. If you are leaving directly from the airport, check the car return arrangements in advance and allow plenty of time.

Do not drive after drinking and check the vehicle’s condition before returning it.

  • Book boat trips with an operator who clearly explains the itinerary, duration, and access rules: routes may change because of wind and rough seas.
  • Before setting off for Navagio, check the latest orders: access to the beach and viewpoints may be subject to safety restrictions.
  • In the Marine National Park, respect protected areas and turtle guidelines: do not touch nests or animals, and do not litter.
  • In summer, book accommodation and a car in advance; bring water, sunscreen, and shoes suitable for roads and trails.
