Val di FassaTrentino-Alto Adige · Italy
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
In the heart of the Dolomites, Val di Fassa alternates welcoming villages, forests, and spectacular views dominated by mountain groups such as the Catinaccio and the Sella. It’s an ideal destination for hiking, skiing, and discovering Ladin culture, with memorable activities and scenery in every season.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
In San Giovanni di Fassa, the museum tells the story, language, and traditions of the Ladin community through engaging collections and displays. It’s a valuable stop for understanding the valley’s cultural identity.
Reachable by the lifts from Vigo di Fassa, it offers spectacular views of the Catinaccio and numerous trails suitable for different experience levels. In winter, it is also a convenient ski area. From the Catinaccio, there are also challenging trails, such as those leading to : only in summer, with experience, proper equipment, and stable weather.
One of the most famous Dolomite passes, it connects Val di Fassa with Val Cordevole and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. From here, a cable car allows you to ascend to Sass Pordoi, known as the Terrace of the Dolomites. Farther south, can be reached from Moena by car or with seasonal buses and offers more scenic routes.
Lago di Carezza
This small alpine lake is famous for its turquoise reflections and the backdrop of the Latemar. An easy loop trail lets you admire it from different angles, while respecting the protected areas. It lies outside Val di Fassa, beyond Passo di Costalunga: a transfer by car or bus is required.

A well-planned trip.
Getting around
A car offers flexibility for reaching passes and nearby resorts, but during the busiest periods traffic and parking can be challenging. Valley buses connect the main villages; in summer and winter, ski lifts make it easier to access many hikes and ski areas. Check timetables, opening times, and road conditions before setting off.
When to go
Summer is ideal for trekking, via ferratas, and high-altitude outings, while autumn brings forests in vivid colors and quieter days. Winter is the season for skiing and snow sports; spring can be changeable and some high-altitude trails remain snow-covered. Always check the weather and lift openings.
Where to eat
In the villages of the valley, you’ll find mountain huts, alpine dairies, and restaurants that showcase Ladin and Trentino cuisine. Dishes to try include canederli, polenta, game, and local cheeses, often served with traditional desserts. In high season, it’s advisable to book ahead, especially for dinner and at the most popular huts.
Quick tips
- 01In summer and on winter weekends, book accommodation and activities in advance: the valley is very busy at peak times.
- 02Before setting out on a hike, check the forecast, elevation gain, walking time, and trail conditions; bring suitable clothing even if you start out in sunshine.
- 03Find out about passes for lifts and public transport: they can make getting around easier and reduce the need to use the car.
