San Cristóbal de Las CasasChiapas · Mexico
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
In the mountains of Chiapas, San Cristóbal de Las Casas wins you over with its cobblestone streets, brightly colored houses, and a rich culture shaped in part by the region’s Indigenous communities. Stroll among churches and museums, stop by the markets, and let yourself be carried along by the city’s welcoming rhythm.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Overlooking the main square, the cathedral stands out for its vividly colored baroque façade and Indigenous-inspired details. It is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
This religious complex impresses with its richly decorated façade, considered a remarkable example of Chiapas baroque. Inside is also the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya, dedicated to the textile traditions of the region.
Housed in a historic house, the museum tells the story and culture of the Indigenous peoples of Chiapas, with particular attention to the Lacandón. Its collections and peaceful garden make the visit an engaging experience.
At the top of a staircase on Cerro de Guadalupe, this church offers a peaceful stop and a beautiful view over the city rooftops. It is especially lovely at sunset.

How to get around
The historic center is easy to explore on foot, but the cobblestone streets and some uphill sections call for comfortable shoes. To reach farther neighborhoods or nearby towns, you can use colectivos, shared minibuses that depart when full. Taxis are useful at night or with luggage: agree on the fare before setting off if the meter is not available. For Tuxtla Gutiérrez airport, which is reached via a winding route, consider a transfer or shuttle and allow plenty of time.
When to go
From November to April, the climate is generally drier and the days are pleasant for exploring the city. From May to October, rain is more frequent, often in the afternoon, while the evenings can be cool in any season. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket, especially if you are traveling in the rainiest months.
Where to Eat
In the city center and at the markets, you'll find Chiapanecan cuisine, food stalls, and places suited to different budgets. Try regional specialties such as sopa de pan and tamales, as well as coffee grown in Chiapas. To sample street food, choose busy spots where dishes are cooked to order; in restaurants, ask how spicy the dish is.
Quick tips
- 01Bring cash in pesos: you may need it in markets, small shops, and for local transport.
- 02Nights are cool because of the altitude: pack something warm even if you are traveling in the dry season.
- 03Ask permission before photographing people, especially in indigenous communities and places of worship.
- 04For excursions outside the city, check road conditions and arrange your return with a reliable operator.
Wake up in the right place.
