Get to know the historic center and its main square.
10:00
Zócalo and Cathedral
Spend about 2–3 hours in the central square and around the exterior of the San Cristóbal Cathedral, taking in the façades, arcades, and daily life of the center. The area is best explored on foot; from the square you can take a break in a café or have lunch nearby, with an approximate budget of 100–250 MXN per person. For any visit inside the cathedral or for celebrations, check local guidelines and dress respectfully.
The streets of the center are mostly cobblestoned: choose comfortable shoes and consider leaving a free afternoon to settle in.
Learn about regional craftsmanship and visit two Tzotzil communities with respect for their rules and traditions.
08:00
Templo de Santo Domingo and Artisan Market
Before leaving the city, set aside about 45–60 minutes for the Santo Domingo complex and the artisan stalls around it: compare textiles, embroidery, and wooden objects, asking the price before buying. From the center, it is a 10–15 minute walk; budget 100–500 MXN or more for any purchases. Visiting inside the complex depends on religious activities and access conditions: check the latest information.
Carry small bills and ask permission before photographing people or stalls.
10:00
San Juan Chamula (Church of San Giovanni)
Reach San Juan Chamula by colectivo or on a local excursion: the road trip usually takes about 30–45 minutes, though times and fares may vary. Allow 60–90 minutes for the square and the church, with a possible indicative entry contribution of 30–50 MXN to be checked on site. Strict rules apply inside: follow the community’s instructions and do not take photos, especially in the church, unless you have explicit authorization.
A local guide can help you understand the cultural context without interfering with religious practices.
13:00
Zinacantán (Textile workshops)
Continue by car or on a tour to Zinacantán; the transfer from Chamula takes around 30–45 minutes. Set aside 1–2 hours for a workshop or an agreed visit, observing the floral embroidery and weaving techniques; a contribution or purchase may cost about 50–300 MXN, depending on the experience chosen. Plan for a simple lunch break in the village or on the way back, roughly 100–200 MXN per person, and arrange your return transport to San Cristóbal in advance.
Always ask for consent before photographing people, homes, or craft demonstrations.
Admire the canyon from the water, visit the center of Chiapa de Corzo, and finish with two city museums.
07:00
Sumidero Canyon (Boat tour)
Depart from San Cristóbal on a tour or private transfer to the Cahuaré dock, allowing about 1–1.5 hours of travel each way. The boat ride often lasts around 2 hours; the boat-and-transfer package can cost roughly 500–1,000 MXN per person, to be confirmed with the operator, while any entrance fees or contributions may be separate. Bring sunscreen, water, and a windproof layer: time on the boat can mean sun and spray.
Confirm the boarding point, duration, inclusions, and tour conditions in advance; the itinerary may be affected by the weather.
11:30
Chiapa de Corzo
From the dock, reach the center of Chiapa de Corzo with the agreed transport, then stroll through the square and admire the colonial La Pila fountain and the historic buildings. Allow about 1.5–2 hours, including lunch at a fonda or restaurant, with an estimated cost of 120–250 MXN per person. If you buy handicrafts, check materials and prices, and leave enough time for the return to San Cristóbal, which can take about 1–1.5 hours.
With shared tours, clearly agree on the departure time and meeting point.
15:45
Na Bolom Museum
Back in town, get to the museum by taxi or on foot from the center and allow about 60–90 minutes for the collections linked to Lacandon culture and the research work of Frans and Gertrude Blom. Admission may be roughly in the range of 60–100 MXN, but both the fee and visit format should be checked on the official website before you go. If the canyon tour runs long, shorten the stop or move this visit to another available time.
Check opening hours, ticket prices, and possible guided tours in advance.
17:15
Amber Museum of Chiapas
Wrap up with about 45–60 minutes dedicated to the history and varieties of Chiapas amber, observing the color, inclusions, and craftsmanship of the pieces on display. From Na Bolom Museum you can get there by taxi in about 10–15 minutes or continue on foot in about 20–25 minutes; plan on an estimated entrance fee of 30–80 MXN, to be confirmed. For dinner in the historic center, allow around 150–300 MXN per person, depending on the chosen restaurant.
The visit is scheduled for the afternoon, but check the official opening hours and actual availability first.
