THE PLACES THAT TELL SAMOTRACIA

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

All places on the map ↗

Sanctuary of the Great Gods

This important archaeological site preserves the remains of the famous sanctuary of the mysteries of Samothrace, visited in antiquity by pilgrims from across the Mediterranean. The ruins are set in a striking wooded landscape near the coast.

Chora of Samothrace

The island’s capital climbs a hill with cobbled alleys, traditional houses, and sweeping views of the sea. At the top, the remains of the medieval fortress tell the story of this village’s strategic past.

Fonias Waterfalls

A trail along the stream leads past natural pools, lush vegetation, and waterfalls set into the mountain. The path can be slippery: proper shoes and caution are important, especially near the water.

Samothrace Hot Springs

The thermal village of Therma is a pleasant base for exploring the island’s northern trails and relaxing in its hot springs. The area is surrounded by plane trees and woodland, with a calm, laid-back atmosphere.

Pachia Ammos Beach

Among the island’s most popular beaches, Pachia Ammos offers sand, clear water, and an open landscape at the foot of the mountains. It’s an inviting choice for a seaside break after exploring the interior.

Mount Fengari

At 1.611 meters, it is the highest peak in Samothrace and dominates the entire island with spectacular views. The ascent requires preparation and favorable weather conditions, but it rewards hikers with a memorable experience.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

You arrive in Samothrace by ferry from Alexandroupoli, at the port of Kamariotissa: check timetables and availability, as departures can vary depending on the season and sea conditions. On the island, buses connect some settlements, but services are limited, especially outside summer. To reach beaches, trails, and mountain villages, a rental car offers greater freedom; book it in advance during the busiest months. Roads can be narrow and winding, so drive carefully. In Kamariotissa you’ll find services and connections, while Chora and Therma are accessible by road.

When to go

From May to October, the climate is generally more suitable for exploring the island, swimming, and hiking. June and September are often a good balance between pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds; July and August are hotter and busier. In spring, streams and waterfalls can be especially scenic, but wet trails require caution. Outside peak season, some services and connections may be reduced.

Where to eat

In Kamariotissa, Chora, and Therma you’ll find tavernas and local eateries, with opening hours that can change depending on the season. Look for Greek dishes and local specialties such as goat, fish, and island produce. For dinner at a popular spot, especially in summer, it’s a good idea to check opening times and book ahead. In smaller villages, choices may be limited: check in advance if you plan to eat away from the main towns.

Quick tips

  1. Check ferry times before you leave and double-check them if there is wind or rough seas.
  2. If you want to explore the island independently, book your car in advance and refuel whenever you get the chance.
  3. For trails and waterfalls, wear shoes with good grip: rocks and passages near the water can be slippery.
  4. Bring water and sun protection on your outings and respect the environment, avoiding litter and open fires.
