SAMOTRACIA · ITINERARY

Samothrace (Evros, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Greece) in 1 day – Complete itinerary

1 day · Archaeology, villages, nature, trekking

The day begins in Kamariotissa and follows an eastbound itinerary, alternating the island’s archaeological heritage with its mountain landscapes. A rental car is the most practical way to reach the stops and handle the inland roads; still, allow extra time for breaks and for road conditions. The program ends in Therma with a walk to the vathres, the natural pools formed by the streams. Times, access, and costs are indicative: check up-to-date information on official channels before your visit.

Day 1 – From the port to the sanctuaries and the vathres

08:30–20:00 Active, with car transfers and a walk

Discover Samothrace’s main cultural landmarks and end the day amid the watery landscapes of Therma.

08:30

Port of Kamariotissa

Start at the port, the ferry arrival point and the island’s main transport hub, and pick up the car you booked in advance here: check availability and conditions directly with the rental company. Set aside about 30–45 minutes to organize the day and buy water and snacks; any rental and fuel costs are approximately 45–80 € and 15–25 € per vehicle.

Ferry times vary: plan your stops based on the actual arrival and check schedules with the ferry company.

09:30

Sanctuary of the Great Gods

Drive to the archaeological site in about 15–20 minutes and allow 1 hour and 30 minutes to explore the area, taking in the remains of the sacred complexes and the wooded landscape around them. Admission may have an indicative cost of 0–10 € per person; check fees, accessibility, and up-to-date information on the official website of the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring water: the ground can be uneven.

11:30

Chora (Main Town)

Continue by car to Chora, generally reachable in about 15–20 minutes, and set aside 1 hour and 45 minutes to wander through its narrow lanes, traditional houses, and hilltop views. You can stop for lunch at a taverna; budget roughly 12–25 € per person, depending on your meal choice, and check availability and prices on site.

The streets in the center are narrow and sloping: leave your car in the permitted spaces on the edge of town.

14:30

Therma (Vathres)

From Chora, reach Therma in about 20–30 minutes, then spend the afternoon walking to the vathres along the stream trails. Allow at least 2–3 hours for your chosen route, including stops and the return trip; access to the natural area is generally free, while any local services or activities may have varying costs. Head back while there is still enough daylight and choose your route based on water levels and your abilities.

The rocks near the waterfalls can be slippery: avoid jumping from unfamiliar spots and do not tackle challenging sections without proper equipment.
