3 days / 2 nights · Archaeology, villages, waterfalls, beaches
The itinerary starts from Kamariotissa and the nearby archaeological area of Paleopoli, to discover the port and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, one of the island’s landmark sites. The second day explores the northern, mountainous part, between Chora, the Fonias stream, and the natural pools of Gria Vathra. The final day is dedicated to the southern coast and the inland area, with a stop at Pachia Ammos and a gastronomic, scenic finish at Profitis Ilias. A car makes it possible to connect the stops more flexibly; times and costs are indicative and should be adjusted to local conditions.
Day 1 · Walking · 7.4 km · 95 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Get your bearings in Kamariotissa and devote the rest of the day to the island’s main archaeological complex.
10:00
Kamariotissa
Start at the port, the ferry arrival point and a convenient place to pick up a car or arrange transport around the island. A stroll along the waterfront takes about 45–60 minutes; budget approximately €0 for the walk, plus any drinks or the cost of rental.
If you’re arriving by ferry, check your connection and vehicle availability in advance: local services can be less flexible outside peak travel periods.
11:30
Sanctuary of the Great Gods
From Kamariotissa, reach Paleopoli in about a 10–15 minute drive and spend 1.5–2 hours exploring the sanctuary ruins, taking in the theater, temples, and buildings linked to the famous mystery rites. Allow for an estimated admission of €0–10, to be checked on the official website along with any visiting and ticketing arrangements.
The site is extensive and partly exposed to the sun: bring water, a hat, and shoes suitable for uneven ground.
14:30
Archaeological Museum of Samothrace
The museum is in the same Paleopoli area, so you can reach it on foot in just a few minutes from the sanctuary. Set aside about 60–90 minutes for the island’s finds and the materials that help interpret the complex; budget for a possible indicative ticket of €0–10 and check prices and access on the official website. For lunch, plan on about an hour in the area or on the way back toward Kamariotissa.
Check the museum’s updated information before visiting: opening hours and entry conditions are not stated here with certainty.
Explore the historic village and devote the middle part of the day to the river landscapes in the north of the island.
09:00
Chora and the Gateluzzi Fortress
Reach Chora in about a 10–15 minute drive from Kamariotissa and explore on foot the uphill alleys, traditional houses, and the remains of the Gateluzzi fortress. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk and viewpoints; the exterior visit usually involves no cost, while any specific access points should be checked on site.
Park in the designated areas on the edge of the village and note that some streets are steep and paved with stone.
11:30
Fonias Waterfalls
From Chora, continue toward the northeastern part of the island, allowing around 30–40 minutes by car to the stream area, then continue on foot along the trail. Set aside at least 2–3 hours to reach and view the waterfalls and natural pools along the way; the excursion may be free, while parking and transportation depend on local conditions.
The trail can be slippery and may require stream crossings: wear shoes with good grip, bring water, and do not go beyond the level suited to your experience.
15:00
Gria Vathra
After a lunch break, drive to the Therma and Gria Vathra area, allowing about 20–30 minutes of driving from the Fonias sector. Set aside 1–2 hours for a walk in the greenery and, if conditions allow, a stop at the natural pools; budget €0 for the trail, excluding any local parking or service fees.
Wet rocks can be very slippery: avoid diving without checking the depth and any obstacles underwater.
Wrap up the trip by alternating a beach stop on the southern coast with a return inland to the village.
09:00
Pachia Ammos Beach
Head by car to the southern coast and allow about 45–60 minutes from Kamariotissa, depending on the route and road conditions. Leave 2–3 hours for swimming, a walk along the shore, and a break; beach access is generally free, but any services, sunbeds, or food and drinks have variable costs, roughly from €5 to €20.
Bring water and sunscreen, and check local sea conditions before swimming.
13:30
Profitis Ilias
From the beach, drive to the village of Profitis Ilias, allowing about 35–50 minutes for the transfer; spend 1–2 hours wandering among the houses and enjoying the inland scenery. You can stop for an early lunch or dinner at a tavern, with an estimated cost of €15–30 per person, depending on your choices and what you order.
The road crosses mountainous areas: drive carefully and factor in the time needed to return to Kamariotissa or reach the port.
