This elegant 18th-century mansion once belonged to one of the island’s most influential families. Its interiors and furnishings evoke the atmosphere of the wealthy homes of Hydra’s shipowners.
The cathedral stands in the historic center, just a few steps from the harbor, within a monastic complex with a bell tower and courtyard. It is one of the main places of worship and an important witness to the island’s history.
This small fishing harbor, west of the center, offers a quieter atmosphere and lovely views of the boats and houses overlooking the water. It can be reached on a pleasant walk along the coast.

On Hydra, there are no cars: the town center and the harbor are explored on foot, among stone alleys and stairways. To reach some beaches and coves, you can use water taxis, which depart from the harbor and often operate on varying schedules. There are also trails for exploring the island on foot, but some routes are steep and offer little shade. Wear comfortable shoes and, if you have bulky luggage, ask in advance about transport services with pack animals.
Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling and hiking, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is the best season for the sea, but July and August bring more visitors, intense heat, and higher demand for accommodation and water taxis. In winter, the island is quiet, but some services and connections may be less frequent.
In the harbor and the center’s alleys you’ll find tavernas, cafés, and restaurants, with Greek dishes and fish often featured on the menus. For a more relaxed atmosphere, move away from the busiest waterfront areas and compare menus before choosing. Also try the local specialties and almond sweets, such as amygdalota. In high season, it’s advisable to book dinner in advance, especially at the most popular places.
