Day 1 – Hydra: port, memory and bastions

10:00–21:00 Easy walks, with breaks

Discover the main historic sites in the center of Hydra along a walking route clustered around the harbor.

10:00

Hydra Harbor

Start on the waterfront and spend about 45 minutes taking in the harbor, the docks, and the stone houses climbing the slopes. This is a free walk; get around on foot, because motor traffic is heavily restricted in the historic center and the distances between stops are short. If you arrive by ferry, allow time to disembark and get your bearings.

Wear comfortable shoes: the ground can be uneven and, in some places, slippery.

11:00

Statue of Andreas Miaoulis

Reach the statue with a walk of about 5–10 minutes from the harbor and stop for around 25 minutes. Take in the monument dedicated to Admiral Andreas Miaoulis and the link between the memory of the Greek War of Independence and the island’s maritime tradition. Viewing the exterior is free.

The waterfront walk offers several spots from which to photograph the statue and the harbor.

12:00

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Continue on foot for about 5 minutes to the cathedral and set aside 30–40 minutes for the visit, if accessible. Inside, pay attention to the iconostasis, the furnishings, and traces of the island’s religious history; dress respectfully and bear in mind that a service may be in progress. Any access and visiting arrangements should be checked on the official website or with local contacts.

Lunch can be arranged freely in the alleys or by the harbor; allow about 60–90 minutes and check prices on site.

14:00

Hydra Historical Archives Museum

From the cathedral, walk to the museum in about 5–10 minutes and allow 60–90 minutes for the visit, depending on accessibility and up-to-date information. The collections and documents tell the story of Hydra’s maritime and political past, giving context to the monuments visited in the morning. Expect an indicative entrance fee of around 0–10 €; check the official website for opening hours, any tickets, and access conditions.

If the museum cannot be visited in the planned time slot, use the time for a break in the center and check an alternative slot through the official channels.

17:00

Bastions with the cannons

Head back toward the harbor and follow the waterfront to the bastions, with an estimated walk of 10–15 minutes, then stop for around 45 minutes. Observe the cannons and the defensive position of the bastions in relation to the harbor entrance; access to the outdoor areas is generally a ticket-free stroll, though any indoor spaces or access arrangements may vary. Stay until late afternoon light, then devote the remaining time to dinner or a leisurely walk along the waterfront: budget 15–35 € for a meal, depending on your choice and the venue.

Be careful of steps and exposed edges; for the walk back to the port, allow about 10–15 minutes on foot.
