This coastal spot is known for its two bays, its seafront promenade, and the view of Chora Castle. It’s a pleasant place to swim and stop for dinner by the sea.
Near the village of Mylopotamos, the waterfalls tumble into a shaded gorge, among lush vegetation and small stone bridges. A path leads to the natural pools, especially inviting after the rains.
The remains of the fortress dominate the picturesque bay of Avlemonas, a rocky inlet with crystal-clear waters. A visit pairs well with a stroll among the village’s whitewashed houses.
This is the island’s main sanctuary, set in a quiet landscape in the western part of Kythira. The monastery houses an icon of the Virgin Mary deeply revered by the locals.
This natural cave is famous for its rock formations and for the frescoes in the small chapel inside. A visit reveals one of the island’s most atmospheric inland corners.
From a first stroll to a week of discoveries. A starting point to make your own.
A compact itinerary blending the medieval charm of the capital with the island’s iconic southern bays.
Three days discovering the contrasts between the lush interior and the island’s best-known coastlines.
A full seven-day immersion to explore every Byzantine, natural, and seaside secret of Kythera.
To reach Kythira, you can fly from Athens or arrive by ferry, with services varying according to the season and departure port. On the island, renting a car or scooter is the most practical way to explore beaches and villages, which are often far apart. The roads are partly narrow and winding: drive carefully, especially after sunset. Local buses are limited and runs can be less frequent outside the high season. If you are traveling without your own vehicle, check taxi schedules and availability in advance.
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is pleasant, the sea is often suitable for swimming, and the island is less crowded. July and August are the hottest and liveliest months, but also the ones when it’s wise to book accommodation and transport well in advance. In spring and autumn, some activities and connections may have reduced hours: check them before departure.
The tavernas in the villages and small harbors are a great choice for trying fish, homemade Greek dishes, and local products. Look for island specialties such as honey and fatourada, the traditional liqueur made with tsipouro and cinnamon. Outside the high season, check opening hours and consider booking at the most popular places.
