1 day · History, villages, views, beaches
The day focuses on the south of the island and follows a natural route from Chora toward the coast: first the historic center and the castle, then the port of Kapsali, and finally Chalkos Beach. The first two stops can be explored on foot, while an car or scooter is very useful for reaching the coastal locations, especially for the return trip. The schedule leaves room for a lunch break and a swim without adding detours. Durations, transfers, and costs are approximate and may vary depending on the season and sea conditions.

Discover Chora's historical heritage and end the day between the port of Kapsali and the sea at Chalkos.
10:00
Chora (Capital)
Spend about 75 minutes wandering the capital’s lanes, among traditional houses, sea views, and small squares: stroll unhurriedly toward the upper part of the village, where the view opens over the coast. From Kapsali, Chora is about 5–10 minutes by car; allow around 2–5 € for a coffee or drink. For this stop, comfortable shoes and a break in the shade during the hottest hours are enough.
Park in the designated spaces on the edge of the center and continue on foot.
11:30
Venetian Castle of Kythera
From the center of Chora, reach the castle on foot in about 10–15 minutes along an uphill route with a sometimes uneven surface. Allow about an hour to explore the walls and take in the view from above of Kapsali and the two gulfs; access and any ticket price, roughly 0–8 €, depend on local conditions and should be checked on the official website before your visit. Bring water, as the sun can be intense.
Check the official website for any access methods and costs before you set off.
13:00
Kapsali
Drive down to Kapsali in about 5–10 minutes, or consider a longer, steeper walk; set aside about two hours for the area. You can stroll along the waterfront, stop for lunch, and take a swim if conditions allow: expect roughly 12–25 € per person for a simple meal. The bay offers a lovely view back toward Chora and the castle, making it a good spot for a short photo stop as well.
After lunch, check sea conditions and keep water with you for the next transfer.
16:00
Chalkos Beach
From Kapsali, reach Chalkos in about 15–20 minutes by car, following the road toward the coast and driving carefully on the final stretch. Spend the afternoon here swimming and relaxing: bring water, sunscreen, and shoes suitable for a pebble beach; for any food or drinks, budget around 3–10 € per person. Toward evening, head back at a relaxed pace to Chora or Kapsali, allowing about 15–20 minutes of driving and checking road and sea conditions on site.
Do not rely on services or facilities at the beach without first confirming their availability on your travel date.
