Kythira (Nissi, Attiki, Greece) in 3 days – Complete Itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Villages, Venetian history, nature, beaches

The route is organized by area: the first day is devoted to Chora and Kapsali Bay, the second to the western inland area of Mylopotamos, and the third to the southeastern coast. The stops are designed to be reached by car, with varying walking times and enough time to visit at a relaxed pace. Kaladi Beach requires particular attention because of the path and the access stairs, while for the waterfalls it is useful to have shoes suitable for uneven terrain. Opening hours, accessibility, any tickets and route conditions should be checked before visiting through official channels or locally.

Day 1 – Chora, the castle and the bay of Kapsali

09:00–20:00 Easy walks and scenic stops

Discover the historic center of Kythera and end the day by the sea, without leaving the southern area.

09:00

Chora

Set aside about two hours for the lanes of the capital, among traditional houses, small squares, and sea views; the center is best explored on foot, and some streets are uphill or paved with cobblestones. Park in the designated areas on the edge of the village and budget 3–7 € for a coffee or a simple breakfast. For a more substantial break, allow around 10–18 € per person for a casual meal.

In the morning, the walk is generally more pleasant on hot days; check on-site for any traffic restrictions.

11:15

Venetian Castle

Reach the castle on foot from Chora in about 10–15 minutes, following the uphill lanes to the promontory, and allow about an hour to explore the walls and take in the views over Kapsali and the open sea. Access to the outdoor areas may be free, but any areas open to visitors or special activities may involve charges: check official information before departure. Bring water and shoes with sturdy soles.

Do not assume access or opening hours: check official announcements and local conditions.

14:30

Kapsali

Drive down from Chora in about 5–10 minutes or walk in about 20–30 minutes, taking the elevation change into account; set aside the afternoon for the bay, a stroll along the seafront, and, if the sea allows, a swim. The beach and promenade normally do not require an entrance fee, while sun loungers and umbrellas may have variable rates, roughly 10–25 € for two people. For dinner on the seafront, budget about 18–30 € per person, excluding drinks or depending on the restaurant.

If you return to Chora on foot after sunset, bring a light and check the route in advance.

Day 2

Mylopotamos, waterfalls and Kato Chora

09:00–18:00 Nature walks with cultural stops

Explore the lush inland landscape of the western interior and the historic remains of the village of Kato Chora.

09:00

Mylopotamos

From Chora, reach Mylopotamos by car in about 35–45 minutes, following the inland roads and allowing extra time for narrow streets. Set aside about an hour for the village and its traditional architecture, locating the walking paths to the valley on site; entry to the village is free and a drink or breakfast may cost roughly 3–7 €. If you stop for lunch in the area, expect about 12–20 € per person for a simple meal.

Stock up on water before starting the walk to the valley and respect any local guidance.

11:00

Fonissa Waterfalls (Neraida)

From the village, follow the marked trail toward the gorge and the waterfalls: the walk can take about 20–40 minutes each way, depending on your starting point and trail conditions. Allow at least an hour for the visit and enjoy the valley vegetation; natural access is generally free, but water flow or easy walking conditions are not guaranteed in every season. Allow 0–5 € for any incidental local expenses and bring hiking shoes or footwear with good grip.

Avoid getting close to wet rocks and check locally whether the trail is passable after rain or during dry periods.

14:30

Kato Chora

Reach Kato Chora by car in about 5–10 minutes from Mylopotamos, or on foot if you are already familiar with the local connections, and take your time exploring the historic village and the castle remains. Allow about 60–90 minutes for the narrow lanes, stone architecture, and scenic viewpoints; the walk is free, while any spending on a drink or snack may be around 3–8 €. Head back while there is still enough light, as some sections are uneven and not suitable for walking in the dark.

Check official sources beforehand for any regulated access or cultural events before visiting.

Day 3 – Kaladi and the Avlemonas coast

09:00–18:30 Morning by the sea and a relaxed afternoon

Enjoy one of the island’s most picturesque beaches and end the trip in the seaside village of Avlemonas.

09:00

Kaladi Beach

Set off early and reach Kaladi by car from Chora in about 25–35 minutes, checking road conditions and where parking is allowed. The descent to the beach is via a path and a steep staircase: allow about 15–25 minutes each way and bring water, a hat, and everything you need, as facilities may be limited or absent. Access to the beach is generally free; any expense depends on parking or available services, roughly 0–10 €.

Do not attempt the descent if the path is wet or if sea and wind conditions make staying there unsafe.

14:30

Avlemonas

After the beach, drive for about 15–20 minutes to Avlemonas and spend the afternoon strolling among the small harbor, the houses by the sea, and the rocky coves. Visiting the village is free; for a late lunch or light dinner, budget about 15–28 € per person, while a drink may cost around 3–7 €. If you want to swim, choose a safe access point and check sea conditions on site.

Leave time for the return journey and check transport options in advance, especially if you do not have a car.

  • For the waterfalls and Kaladi, bring shoes with good grip, water, and sun protection; assess the route based on terrain conditions and your abilities.
