Chora of Andros
The capital stands out for its neoclassical mansions, well-kept squares, and narrow lanes that lead down to the sea. Strolling to the waterfront is the best way to take in its elegant atmosphere.
Andros combines the charm of the Cyclades with an unusually lush landscape of valleys, streams, and ancient paths. Between the elegant Chora, art museums, and secluded beaches, the island offers a different experience at every turn.

Built on a rock off the port of Chora, it is one of the island’s most photographed landmarks. Its solitary silhouette out at sea offers a particularly striking view, especially at sunset.
In the center of Chora, the museum houses finds that tell the story of the island from antiquity to the Roman era. Among the most important pieces are sculptures and artifacts from the site of Zagora.
This exhibition space has helped make Chora a noteworthy cultural destination, with exhibitions devoted to Greek and international artists. A visit is a pleasant break between walks around the village.
Near the village of Apikia, the waterfalls can be reached by a short walk through a shaded, lush gorge. The spot shows Andros at its greenest and freshest, in sharp contrast to the typical image of the Cycladic islands.
Framed by hills and vegetation, Achla is one of the island’s most unspoiled beaches. Its clear waters and the mouth of the stream that crosses the valley make it a special destination for those seeking nature and tranquility.
From a first stroll to a week of discoveries. A starting point to make your own.
An essential route that takes in the lively port, the seaside villages and the neoclassical elegance of the capital.
Three days to immerse yourself in the island’s traditions, visiting ancient monasteries, natural springs and golden beaches.
A week discovering the best-kept secrets of Andros, from mountain trails to the most remote and wild bays.
Ferries arrive at the port of Gavrio, connected mainly with Rafina, near Athens. To reach Chora and the other towns there are buses, but services can be infrequent, especially outside summer. A rental car or scooter offers more freedom to explore beaches and inland villages. The roads are often winding and in some places narrow: allow for longer travel times than the distance might suggest. In high season, book your vehicle in advance.
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is pleasant, the trails are inviting, and the island is generally less crowded. July and August are the liveliest months and best for those looking for beach days, but they can be hot and windy. Spring is particularly appealing for walking among green landscapes and streams. In winter, many tourist services reduce their hours or close, so it’s worth checking transport links and opening times.
In Chora, Batsi and Gavrio, you’ll find tavernas and restaurants, with a wider choice in the summer months. Try froutalia, a typical island omelet often made with potatoes and sausage, as well as local cheeses and the catch of the day. In the inland villages, tavernas often serve home-style dishes and traditional recipes. For fish, always ask for the price by weight and check what has been caught that day. In high season, booking in the evening is a good idea.
