Andros combines an elegant neoclassical capital, trails among springs and waterfalls, and beaches overlooking the Aegean. The first day is dedicated to Chora, best explored on foot; the second heads inland with short walks and car transfers; the third follows the western coast, convenient for reaching the port of Gavrio. Distances are not great, but the roads are often winding: the times indicated include allowances for stops and do not replace checking local schedules.

Day 1 – Chora, art and sea views

10:00–21:00 Easy walks

Discover the historic center, museums, and waterfront of Andros on foot.

10:00

Orientation walk in Chora

Spend about an hour wandering the pedestrian streets, neoclassical mansions, and passages between little squares and sea views. If you’re coming from Gavrio, allow 35–45 minutes by car; park outside the historic core and continue on foot.

The streets in the center are narrow and partly cobblestoned.

11:15

Archaeological Museum of Andros

Visit the collections that illustrate the island’s history and the artifacts from its archaeological sites, including the Zagora area. Allow about 45–60 minutes; admission may be free or paid depending on current rules, which should be checked before your visit.

Opening hours and days may change out of season.

12:30

Lunch in the center of Chora

Choose a taverna or café in the central streets and try seasonal Greek dishes, local cheeses, or a fish-based specialty. For a simple meal, budget around 12–25 € per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the venue.

14:00

Museum of Contemporary Art Andros

Explore the temporary exhibitions and collections devoted to modern art, housed in the heart of the town. The visit usually takes 45–75 minutes; admission can vary, typically 5–10 €, and the program is seasonal.

Check the exhibition and opening hours on the website or at the tourist office.

15:30

Kairis Library

Stop by this historic library, connected to the intellectual Theófilos Kairis and the island’s cultural tradition. Allow 30–45 minutes, keeping in mind that access to the spaces and collections may depend on opening hours or guided visits.

16:30

Panagia Thalassini and Tourlitis Lighthouse

Head to the church overlooking the sea and then continue to the viewpoints from which you can see Tourlitis Lighthouse, perched on a rock. These are outdoor stops with no ticket required; allow about an hour in total to walk, take photos, and enjoy the view.

The lighthouse can be seen from the coast: access to the interior is not available.

19:00

Sunset at Paraporti Beach and dinner

Head down to Paraporti for a walk along the beach and, if the sea and conditions allow, a swim. Return to Chora for dinner: an estimated expense is 18–35 € per person, varying according to fish, drinks, and season.

Day 2 – Springs, waterfalls and monastery inland

09:00–19:30 Active but flexible

Alternate short nature walks and a cultural visit between the central inland area and the surroundings of Chora.

09:00

Departure from Chora to Menites

Reach Menites in about 20–30 minutes by car, on a scenic and winding road. Bring water and shoes with good grip: the trip can take longer if you want to stop at the viewpoints along the way.

09:45

Menites Springs

Stroll among the springs and the village greenery, admiring the fountains and traditional architecture. The visit is short and free, about 30–45 minutes; respect the spaces and any local signs because water is a precious resource.

11:00

Pithara Waterfalls

Continue by car toward the Apikia area and reach the waterfall trail, with an easy to moderate walk of about 20–40 minutes each way depending on your starting point and conditions. The water flow varies with rainfall and the season; access is usually free.

After rain, the ground can be slippery; avoid getting close to the edges.

12:45

Lunch in Apikia

Stop in the village or nearby for a relaxed meal, with an approximate budget of 12–25 € per person. Alternatively, bring a snack and leave more time for walking: not all places are open year-round.

14:30

Panachrantos Monastery

Reach the monastery by car, allowing about 35–50 minutes from Apikia on inland roads. Spend 45–60 minutes visiting the accessible areas and enjoying the views; there is not necessarily an entrance fee, but a donation is appreciated and access may be limited to reception hours.

Respectful clothing; check opening hours and access conditions in advance.

17:00

Return to Chora and free evening

The return takes roughly 25–40 minutes, depending on traffic and the exact starting point. Wrap up with a stroll or an aperitif in the center: allow 5–12 € for a drink and a small snack.

Day 3

West coast and return from Gavrio

09:00–17:00 Relaxed with car travel

Enjoy the western coast and reach the port with plenty of time to spare for the ferry.

09:00

Departure from Chora to Batsi

Allow about 45–60 minutes by car to Batsi, taking it easy on the island’s winding roads. If you need to board in the afternoon, check the ferry schedule first and adjust the length of your stops: departures from Gavrio can vary depending on the season and the day.

10:00

Stroll in Batsi

Explore the waterfront and the small center, among the port, whitewashed houses, and cafés overlooking the bay. The walk is free and takes about an hour; you can have breakfast or stop for a coffee for around 3–8 €.

11:15

Beach time in Batsi

Set aside an hour for a swim or a break on the beach, which is easily reached from the center. Umbrella and loungers, if available, can cost roughly 10–25 € per set; bring water and sunscreen.

12:45

Lunch by the sea

Have lunch in Batsi before continuing to the port: for a simple meal, budget 15–30 € per person, while fish and drinks can raise the bill. Ask about preparation times if you have a ferry to catch.

14:15

Tower of Agios Petros

Reach the tower by car in about 15–25 minutes, heading toward the Agios Petros area, and view the monument from the outside. The stop is short and free; avoid climbing or entering any areas not marked as open to visitors.

15:15

Gavrio and boarding

Continue to Gavrio, just a few minutes by car from the tower, and leave plenty of time for refueling, car drop-off, and boarding procedures. For ferries, budget roughly 25–45 € per person and a separate fee for the car, varying by company and season; buy tickets in advance during peak periods.

Do not schedule your last stop too close to departure time: check the official timetable and the company’s instructions.

Practical tips

  • Andros does not have an airport: the most common connection is the ferry from Rafina to Gavrio. Check schedules and possible changes before making plans.
  • A car is very useful for the inland areas and for getting around between villages; drive carefully on narrow, winding roads and allow more time than the distance alone suggests.
  • Museums, monasteries, tavernas, and beach services may have seasonal openings or reduced hours: check directly before traveling.
  • Wear suitable shoes for the trails, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; for the waterfalls, check trail conditions and avoid getting too close to slippery ground or unprotected edges.
