Day 1 – The Chora between art, history, and the sea

10:00–21:00 Light walks, with stairs and uphill sections

Discover the main museums and historic viewpoints of the Chora, ending the day on the coast.

10:00

Archaeological Museum of Andros

Spend about an hour exploring the collections that tell the island’s story, from antiquity to finds uncovered at local sites. Pay special attention to the sculptures and materials on display in the room dedicated to Cycladic culture; admission may cost an estimated 3–6 €.

Opening hours vary by season and day of the week: check before your visit.

11:15

Museum of Contemporary Art of Andros

Reach the museum on foot in the center of the Chora in just a few minutes. Allow 60–75 minutes for the temporary exhibitions and modern works; admission is roughly 5–10 €, but it may vary depending on the exhibition.

In the low season, opening may be limited or suspended.

12:45

Lunch in the center of the Chora

Choose a taverna or a small restaurant in the central alleyways and try local specialties, such as island cheeses, seasonal vegetables, or fish. Plan on about 15–25 € for a simple meal with a drink; service is often slower during the busy summer hours.

Ask which dishes are made with local ingredients and which are available that day.

14:15

Panagia Thalassini

Continue on foot to the church overlooking the sea, recognizable by its scenic location near the tip of the Chora. The exterior visit takes about 20–30 minutes: take in the relationship between the building, the rocky coast, and the silhouette of the old settlement.

Reach it with sturdy shoes: there are uneven paving stones and steps nearby.

15:00

Kastro Androu

Explore the remains of the Venetian castle and the passages of the historic quarter, linked by narrow alleys and stairways. Allow about 45 minutes to wander without rushing and admire the sea views; the area is freely accessible, but some sections may be uneven.

Be careful of the wind and do not get close to the exposed edges of the ruins.

16:15

Swimming and a break at Paraporti Beach

Head down to Paraporti, the beach near the Chora, for a break of about two hours between swimming and relaxing. Access is free; sunbeds and umbrellas, if available, may cost roughly 10–25 € per pair. The sea can be rough when strong winds blow.

Bring water and sun protection: facilities and shade are not guaranteed along every stretch.

19:00

Return and evening stroll in the Chora

As you make your way back up from the beach, allow about 45 minutes to cross the center again and stop in a square or a café. A coffee or soft drink costs roughly 3–6 €; the walk back involves stairs and a short but steep climb.

If you'd rather avoid the uphill walk, ask about the local taxi service.

20:00

Dinner in the historic center

End the day with dinner at a taverna in the Chora, choosing shared dishes and Cycladic specialties. Plan on about 20–35 € per person for a meal with a main course and a drink, depending on the venue and your choices.

In summer, it’s a good idea to book ahead, especially at the more popular restaurants.

Practical tips

  • Check museum opening days and hours in advance: in the low season they may be reduced or subject to change.
  • If you arrive by ferry in Gavrio, check the bus connection to Chora and leave some buffer time for possible delays.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles: Chora has steps, hills, and uneven paving.
  • Before stopping at Paraporti, check the wind and sea conditions and bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.
