Chora of Anafi
The main village climbs the slope with white houses, narrow lanes, and glimpses of the sea. It’s the perfect place for a sunset stroll and to soak up the island’s everyday life.
Anafi is a peaceful Cycladic island, loved for its wild beaches, scenic trails, and authentic atmosphere. Between the whitewashed Chora and the dramatic silhouette of Kalamos, it offers an experience far from the pace of the busier islands.

Perched on the summit of Mount Kalamos, this small monastery offers unforgettable views over the Aegean. The climb is demanding, but the panorama more than makes up for the effort.
Also known as Kato Monastiri, it stands at the foot of Kalamos and is a striking stop along the island’s eastern trails. Its peaceful setting makes it a lovely contrast to the ascent to the summit.
On the hill of Kastelli lie the remains of ancient Anafi, with traces of walls and burials from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The walk also offers sweeping views over the island’s inland landscape.
One of the largest and best-known beaches in Anafi, prized for its golden sand and clear sea. Its natural, lightly developed setting preserves a simple, wild atmosphere.
Near the port, Kleisidi is a sheltered bay with pale sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s a convenient choice for a relaxing swim on arrival or before departure.
From a first stroll to a week of discoveries. A starting point to make your own.
A quick dive into the Cycladic architecture of Chora and the island’s most accessible beaches.
Three days to explore Anafi’s wild side and the famous monastery at the foot of the monolith.
A full week to experience the island’s slow pace, among scenic trails and remote coves.
Anafi can be reached by ferry, especially from Santorini, but sailings may be infrequent and vary by season. On the island, a bus connects the port of Agios Nikolaos, Chora, and some beaches, with more limited timetables outside summer. To explore coves and places with fewer services, you can rent a car or a scooter, checking availability and vehicle conditions in advance. The roads are partly narrow and winding: drive carefully and don’t assume all beaches are accessible by car. For some bays and for the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, be prepared to walk.
From June to September you’ll find the warmest weather and the widest range of services, but also more visitors, especially in August. June and September are often a good balance for enjoying the sea and the trails with milder temperatures. In spring and autumn the island is quiet, but connections and activities may be reduced; in winter many facilities close and the meltemi can affect crossings.
Chora and the port are the most convenient places to find tavernas and cafés, with a selection that tends to expand in high season. Look for home-style Cycladic dishes, fish when available, and local specialties such as honey and cheese. Opening hours can be flexible and some places close out of season: if you have a specific spot in mind, check that it’s open before heading over.
