3 days / 2 nights · Villages, archaeology, trekking, monasteries, beaches
The itinerary is organized by area to limit travel on an island where services and connections can vary with the season. The first day combines Chora, the ancient site of Kastelli and a beach stop at Roukounas; the second is devoted to the landscape of Kalamos and requires a good level of fitness. The third day leisurely explores two stretches of coast, leaving time for swimming and breaks. The times indicated are a suggested schedule: before departure, check transport, access, any tickets and official information on the monasteries.
Day 1 · Walking · 6.3 km · 77 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the island’s historic core, reach Kastelli, and end the day on the coast.
09:00
Chora of Anafi
Allow about 2 hours for the whitewashed alleys, stairways, and viewpoints overlooking the sea; go on foot, with suitable shoes for the paved sections. Stop for breakfast or a coffee in town, budgeting around €5–12. For any visit to cultural or religious spaces, check the official information in advance.
Bring water and sun protection: shade in the alleys can be patchy.
12:00
Kastelli (Ancient Anafi)
Reach the archaeological area with a transfer of about 10–20 minutes from Chora, by taxi, rental vehicle, or whichever connections are available; add a walk over uneven ground. Allow 1–1.5 hours to take in the remains of the ancient settlement and the surrounding landscape; access to the natural area is generally free, while any ticket should be checked with official sources. Budget €0–8 for water or a snack to take with you.
Do not leave the path and do not touch or move artifacts.
16:00
Roukounas Beach
From the Kastelli area, reach the beach in about 15–25 minutes by vehicle, depending on the road and conditions; check the runs and accessibility on site before relying on public transport. Set aside 2–3 hours for swimming and a walk along the coast, bringing everything you need: beach access is generally free, while water and snacks may cost around €5–15. Return with a buffer, especially if you depend on seasonal transport.
Shade and services can be limited: bring water, a hat, and a towel.
Explore the monastic complex and tackle the trail toward Kalamiotissa with proper preparation.
07:00
Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (Kato Panagia)
Leave Chora by vehicle or local transfer: allow around 20–30 minutes, to be confirmed depending on the road and available transport. Spend 30–45 minutes in the monastery area and taking in the landscape at the foot of the massif; any access to religious spaces and related arrangements should be checked through official sources. Access to the exterior may be free, but budget €0–10 for a drink or supplies before the trek.
Wear clothing respectful of the place and do not assume the indoor spaces are accessible.
07:45
Trek to Mount Kalamos
From the Kato Panagia area, take the route toward the massif: the terrain is rocky and the climb requires a steady pace, plenty of water, and hiking shoes. Allow about 2–3 hours for the ascent, with short breaks; the trail normally does not require an entry fee, but it may be wise to consider a local guide, typically €25–60 per person depending on service and group. Wind and heat may make it necessary to postpone or cut the hike short.
Set out early, let someone know your planned route, and check the weather and trail conditions.
10:30
Kalamiotissa Monastery (Ano Panagia)
Once you reach the summit, allow 30–45 minutes for a respectful visit to the area and for the views over the sea and the nearby islands; stay on marked paths and do not enter closed-off spaces. The return to the valley usually takes another 2–3 hours, depending on your pace and breaks, so plan to bring a packed lunch and do not rely on services along the route. It is not possible to assume an entrance fee or access to the interior: check official information before visiting.
Bring at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person and save your energy for the descent.
Finish the trip by alternating between a secluded beach and a swim stop around Kalamos.
09:30
Megas Potamos Beach
Reach the beach from Chora by vehicle or a local connection, if available, and allow around 20–30 minutes for the transfer; check the road conditions on site and whether there is any final stretch to cover on foot. Spend 2–3 hours by the sea and along the coast, bringing supplies because facilities and shade may be limited. Access to the beach is usually free of charge; allow €5–15 for water and snacks bought or prepared in advance.
If the road is not suitable for your vehicle, ask for local advice before continuing.
14:00
Agioi Anargyroi
Continue to the coast near Kalamos: the transfer may take around 10–20 minutes by vehicle, or longer if the final stretch must be covered on foot. Spend 2–3 hours swimming and taking a short walk, taking in the coastline and the rocky outline of the massif; beach access is usually free of charge, while a drink or snack break may cost around €5–15. Head back early if you need to reach the port or your accommodation with an infrequent connection.
Check the wind and wave conditions before entering the water, and do not leave any litter on the coast.
