Day 1 – Monodendri, Vikos and stone bridges

10:00–21:00 Easy walks and short drives

Discover the landscape and stone architecture of Zagori through four nearby places.

10:00

Monodendri

Spend about an hour and a half wandering through the stone houses, cobbled lanes, and small squares of the village, taking in details of the arches and traditional roofs. Then allow for about an hour for lunch at a local taverna, with an estimated budget of €15–25 per person; check availability and prices on site. A car is recommended for the rest of the itinerary, since the links between the stops are not practical to cover entirely on foot.

Wear shoes with sturdy soles: stone pavements can be uneven.

12:30

Oxya Viewpoint (Vikos Gorge)

Reach the viewpoint by car from Monodendri, allowing about 15–20 minutes on a mountain road, and set aside about an hour for the stop. From the panoramic point, take in the vastness of Vikos Gorge and its steep slopes; stay on accessible paths only and do not go near exposed edges. The stop at the viewpoint is usually free of charge, but any services or access conditions may vary.

Check the weather before setting off and bring water: exposure to wind and sun can be intense.

14:30

Agia Paraskevi Monastery

Head back toward Monodendri by car and continue on foot along the trail from the village to the monastery, allowing about 15–20 minutes each way and a 30–45 minute visit. In addition to the historic spaces, the route offers views over the gorge: proceed carefully on narrow stretches and respect the religious character of the site. Any admission fee or contribution should be checked through official channels before visiting; as an estimate only, consider €0–3.

For opening times, access, and visiting rules, check the latest official information; choose respectful attire.

16:30

Kokkori Bridge (Noutsos)

Reach the bridge by car in about 15–20 minutes, then allow 30–45 minutes for the visit on foot and for photos from safe spots along the stream. The stone arch bridge is an emblematic example of Zagori’s traditional construction: observe the structure and its relationship with the surrounding landscape without climbing on walls or railings. The exterior visit is free; after the stop, you can return to Monodendri for dinner, approximately €20–35 per person.

The ground near the stream can be slippery: stay on stable paths and do not cross the water if conditions are not safe.

Estimated budget

Lunch at a taverna€15–25 per person

Practical tips

  • To comfortably connect the four places, consider a rental car or private transfer; the roads are mountainous and travel times can be longer.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a light jacket: altitude, wind, and weather conditions can change quickly.
  • Wear walking shoes with good grip for the trails and stone pavements.
  • Before you leave, check official channels for updated information on access, visits, and any possible restrictions.
