Guide to Vari - Voula - Vouliagmeni
VARI - VOULA - VOULIAGMENI · ITINERARY

Vari - Voula - Vouliagmeni (Eastern Attica, Attica, Greece) in 1 day – Complete Itinerary

1 day / 0 nights · Sea, beaches, hot springs, Greek cuisine

The day follows a stretch of the Athens Riviera along a linear itinerary from Voula southward, alternating beaches, views over the Saronic Gulf, and a food break inland in Vari. The main stops are close to one another, but to save time it’s useful to combine coastal buses with short taxi rides, especially when moving between beaches. Lake Vouliagmeni offers a thermal and nature-based interlude, while Astir Beach and Varkiza show two different ways to enjoy the shoreline. In autumn and winter, swimming and beach services depend on the weather and seasonal opening hours.

Day 1 – From Voula to Varkiza: beaches, thermal lake, and the flavors of Vari

10:00–21:00 Easy walks and short transfers

Discover the different moods of the Athens Riviera and end the day with a traditional dinner in Vari.

10:00

A seaside morning at Voula Beach

Start with a stroll along the Voula waterfront and take in the outline of the coast toward the Saronic Gulf. If the beach is set up and the weather allows, you can stop for a swim or a coffee; access and any sunbeds are subject to a fee and vary by season.

Bring water and sunscreen with you: even in the shoulder seasons, the sun can be intense.

11:15

Coves and the Kavouri promontory

Reach Kavouri Beach by coastal bus or taxi; allow about 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic and your starting point. Spend about an hour walking among the little inlets and rocky outcrops, choosing a quiet stretch to admire the coast. Free beaches do not necessarily have services open outside summer.

The rocks can be slippery: shoes with a grippy sole are more comfortable than flip-flops.

12:30

Thermal swim at Lake Vouliagmeni

Continue to Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural lagoon also fed by thermal springs and surrounded by rocky cliffs. You can swim in the brackish water or relax on the terraces; allow about 1 hour and 30 minutes and check the entrance fee in advance, typically in the range of 15–25 € per person. Opening hours and prices may vary depending on the season and day of the week.

Bring a swimsuit and check the entry rules: food and drinks are generally not allowed inside.

14:15

Lunch in the taverna area of Vari

Head toward Vari for a break in the tavernas of the Vlachika area, known for its grilled cuisine. From the lake the ride is short by taxi; by public transport it may take longer and require a change. For a lunch of souvlaki or grilled meat, sides, and a drink, budget roughly 15–30 € per person.

At lunchtime, places can be busy on weekends: booking is a good idea.

16:00

Walk and stop at Astir Beach

Head back toward the coast and reach Astir Beach, on the Vouliagmeni peninsula. If the beach complex is open, you can access the serviced beach; prices are generally higher than at public beaches and can vary widely depending on the date, services, and booking. If it is closed or you do not want to pay the entrance fee, limit your visit to the publicly accessible coastal spots and follow local signs.

Check opening hours and entry conditions before setting out: it operates seasonally.

17:45

Coastline and facilities at Varkiza Resort - Yabanaki Beach

Continue to Varkiza, with a short taxi ride or bus along the coast, and stroll around the Yabanaki Beach area. In summer the complex offers beach services and activities, while out of season only part of the shoreline may remain accessible. Allow for an indicative cost of 5–15 € for entry or services, when available, plus any refreshments.

Do not take the opening of the facilities for granted: in low season, check the complex's notices.

19:15

Dinner and return from Vari

End the day in Vari, reachable from Varkiza in just a few minutes by taxi or local buses, for dinner at a traditional taverna. Try meze to share, Greek salad, and a grilled specialty; a full dinner costs roughly 20–40 € per person, depending on your choice and drinks. To head back to Athens, check the last buses or book a taxi, especially if you stay out late.

Evening service times may be reduced: check them in advance if you are not traveling by car.

  • For coastal transfers, check the OASA app or local information: traffic and bus frequency can make journeys longer.
  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, water, and shoes suitable for rocks; facilities at free beaches are limited.
  • If you dine in Vari on the weekend, book ahead and plan your evening return to Athens in advance.
