Day 1 – Delta, Old Town, and the Memory of Tulcea

10:00–21:00 Moderate visits and an uphill walk

Get to know the nature and culture of the Danube Delta and end the day with a historic stop and a bird's-eye view over the city.

10:00

Danube Delta Eco-Tourism Center

Spend about 2–3 hours exploring the exhibits dedicated to the delta's ecosystems, birds, fish, and the lives of local communities: models and interpretive materials help you understand the area before any boat trip. You can reach it on foot from the center, or by a short taxi ride; allow roughly 0–20 lei for the transfer, depending on distance and mode. For admission, expect approximately 10–30 lei per person, to be confirmed together with rates and access on official channels.

After the visit, plan a lunch break in Tulcea's center: budget around 35–80 lei for a simple meal, depending on the venue.

16:00

Independence Monument

From the city center, walk toward the monument hill, allowing about 20–30 minutes and an uphill climb; alternatively, a taxi can reduce the effort, with an estimated cost of 10–25 lei. Set aside 45–75 minutes for the monument and viewpoint: take in the commanding position over the city and the Danube and leave time for photos, keeping in mind the terrain and stairs. Access to the outdoor area may be free, but any entry to exhibition spaces or services may have fees: check official information before visiting.

Bring water and comfortable shoes; to end the day, head back to the center on foot or by taxi and consider an estimated dinner cost of 50–120 lei per person.

Day 2 – Tulcea and the Monastic Landscape of the County

10:00–17:30 Cultural visit and car transfer

Discover the local folk traditions and reach Celic-Dere Monastery with enough time for the visit and return.

10:00

Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art

Dedicate about 1–1.5 hours to the collections of traditional clothing, textiles, household objects, and records of the crafts of the Delta and Dobruja. Notice the differences in decorative motifs and materials, which tell the story of the region’s cultural diversity. The museum is located in central Tulcea: allow roughly 10–25 RON for admission, if applicable, and check the official website for availability, rates, and visiting conditions. After your visit, plan lunch in town and continue by car or taxi to the monastery; the drive may take around 40–55 minutes, depending on the road and traffic.

Before setting off, agree the return ride with the driver as well: taxis in the monastery area may be limited.

13:30

Celic-Dere Monastery

Allow about 60–90 minutes to visit the monastic complex at a relaxed pace and take in the architecture, places of worship, and the surrounding hilly landscape, while respecting any religious services in progress. Access may depend on the community’s activities: check official guidance before you leave and consider a suggested donation of 10–30 RON, without treating it as compulsory. Plan for a peaceful stop and modest clothing; then return to Tulcea by car or pre-booked taxi, leaving at least 45–60 minutes for the transfer.

Lunch can be arranged in Tulcea before departure: budget roughly 45–90 RON per person for a simple meal.

Day 3 – From Saon to the heights of Enisala

10:00–21:00 Moderate visits and car transfers

Discover two places of spiritual and historical value in the Tulcea countryside, allowing time for transfers and a lunch break.

10:00

Saon Monastery

Depart from central Tulcea by car: the journey is about 15–20 km and takes roughly 25–35 minutes, depending on your starting point and traffic. Spend around 60–75 minutes at the monastery complex, taking in the church, monastic buildings, and rural setting; visit the places of worship respectfully and check the official website for any access instructions. Entry may be free, but it is wise to allow for a small offering of about 0–20 RON; after the visit, continue to Enisala, stopping for lunch in Babadag or along the way.

Wear clothing suitable for a religious site and check road conditions and visiting instructions in advance.

13:30

Enisala Fortress

From Saon, allow roughly 1 hour and 15–30 minutes of driving, with possible variations depending on the route and stops; plan about 75–90 minutes to explore the fortress ruins and the panoramic views over the waters and surrounding plains. The site is set on high ground: the final stretch may require a short walk and shoes with good grip. Budget for a possible ticket of around 0–20 RON and check the official website for prices and access details; then return to Tulcea, taking approximately 1 hour and 15–30 minutes, for dinner and a free evening.

Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable footwear; the listed prices are indicative.

Day 4 – Histria and the Delta to Mila 23

05:00–20:00 Very intense, with long transfers

Visit the archaeological site of Histria and reach Mila 23 by navigating the Danube Delta.

05:00

Histria Fortress

Leave Tulcea by car or with a private driver: allow about 1 hour and 30–2 hours each way, depending on the route and traffic. Spend about 1 hour and 30–2 hours at the ruins of the ancient city, observing the walls, sacred areas and traces of the different settlement phases; check the official website for updated access and ticket information, typically in the 10–30 RON range. Return directly to Tulcea port: to stay on schedule, you need to arrive with time to spare for boarding.

Arrange the car and entry time in advance; bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for an exposed archaeological site.

10:30

Boat excursion to Mila 23

Board at Tulcea port on a private speedboat booked for the full journey: reaching Mila 23 can take about 1 hour and 30–2 hours each way, but timing and route depend on the boat, water level and Delta conditions. Plan a short stop in the village for lunch and a stroll without straying far from the dock, then return to Tulcea in the afternoon; a private charter can cost roughly 800–1,600 RON per boat, while food and drinks are paid separately. Check the route, actual duration and sailing conditions with the authorized operator before confirming.

The itinerary assumes a private speedboat: a standard shared excursion may take too long to combine with Histria on the same day.

Day 5 – From the wild landscapes of Letea to the port of Sulina

04:30–20:30 Intense, with long transfers

Explore the natural surroundings of Letea and reach Sulina for a walk focused on its historic lighthouse.

04:30

Letea Forest

Leave Tulcea by private speedboat toward the Periprava area, allowing several hours of navigation and a separate local transfer arranged in advance to the forest. Spend about 2–3 hours on the guided excursion, observing the dunes, twisted oaks and distinctive vegetation; stay on authorized paths and do not approach wildlife. Budget roughly 250–600 RON per person for the visit and local transfers, excluding—or to be clarified with the operator—the cost of the private boat.

The early departure and direct connection to Sulina must be booked in advance: this itinerary is not compatible with the regular scheduled boats. Check access conditions for the protected area with the guide and operators.

14:30

Sulina and the old lighthouse

After the visit, continue to Sulina by water on the arranged boat transfer; the journey may take several hours, depending on the route and conditions in the Delta. Once in town, walk toward the old lighthouse and take in the relationship between the port area, the Danube, and the shoreline; allow about 60–90 minutes for the exterior visit and a food break. Budget roughly 100–250 RON per person for the local connection and meal, depending on the setup and operator; the return to Tulcea by private boat is scheduled for late afternoon and may continue until evening.

The timing is approximate and depends on how long the previous stop takes. Before setting off, check availability and access conditions for the lighthouse on official channels; in case of bad weather, agree on an alternative plan.

Day 6 – From the Delta shoreline to Razim Lagoon

04:30–21:00 Challenging, with long transfers

Visit Sfântu Gheorghe beach and enjoy the landscape of Lake Razim, with private connections booked in advance.

04:30

Wild beach of Sfântu Gheorghe

Depart from Tulcea before dawn only after arranging a private boat transfer with an authorized operator: the trip can take several hours and depends on the route, water levels, and weather. Once you reach the area, spend about two hours at the beach and the Danube mouth, staying on permitted paths and leaving no litter; bring water, sunscreen, and shoes suitable for sand. Estimate a rough cost of 30–80 RON per person for a simple stop or local services, while a charter may involve a much higher cost to be agreed for the group. Before departing, confirm with the operator and the relevant authorities the access rules, navigation conditions, and the actual feasibility of the onward connection.

The itinerary assumes a private boat with confirmed route and return times; regular services may not allow the schedule to be kept.

11:30

Lake Razim

From the Sfântu Gheorghe area, take a boat to an agreed landing point, then continue by road to an authorized access point to the lake: the combined transfer may take up much of the day and should be checked with whoever is organizing the navigation. Allow about 60–90 minutes to admire the lagoon and its open horizons from an accessible viewpoint, without entering protected or private areas; bring a packed lunch, as food options along the way may be limited. For a short stop or possible local activity, budget roughly 0–100 RON per person, excluding transport and prebooked services. Then plan the return to Tulcea and do not continue if the transfer has not been confirmed: 21:00 is a schedule limit, not a guarantee of travel time.

Ask the operator to specify in advance the exact access point to the lake, door-to-door timings, and an alternative plan in case of bad weather.

Day 7 – From the Măcin Mountains to the lagoon

05:30–22:00 Very intense, with long transfers

Admire the landscapes of the Măcin Mountains and reach Gura Portiței with a nautical connection booked in advance.

05:30

Măcin Mountains National Park

Depart from Tulcea by car toward the Greci area, allowing approximately 1 hour and 15–30 minutes on the road; for a taxi or private transfer, agree on the price and waiting time in advance. Set aside about 2 hours for a short hiking route suited to your fitness level, without attempting long itineraries: the trails cross arid, scenic hills, where it is important to bring water, sun protection, and shoes with good grip. Entry or any services may cost around 0–20 RON; check the park’s official website for routes, access, and fees.

To stay on schedule, plan to leave the park area by 08:30. The estimate does not include extended stops or difficult trail conditions.

08:30

Gura Portiței Village

Drive to Jurilovca, allowing about 2 hours of travel from the Greci area, then board only with a round-trip connection arranged in advance: the crossing can take roughly 1 hour each way, but times and availability depend on the service and lake conditions. Once there, limit your visit to a walk along the sandbar between the lagoon and the Black Sea and a simple lunch break; allow 2–3 hours on site, without straying too far from the boarding point. Boat rides and water transfers may cost around 100–250 RON per person, while an informal meal can add about 40–90 RON; ask operators for updated fares and schedules and verify official information before departure.

The return to Tulcea can take another 2–3 hours by land, in addition to the crossing. If it is not possible to book a boat compatible with the return, do not set out for this stop on the same day.

Practical tips

  • Check the official channels of the Eco-Tourism Center for any changes to access, rates, and activities before you set out.
  • The climb to the Independence Monument can take longer in hot weather, rain, or if you have reduced mobility: consider taking a taxi for part of the route.
  • Bring water, sun protection, and shoes with soles suitable for an uphill walk.
  • If you want to add a boat excursion on another occasion, find out in advance about the duration, boarding point, and Danube conditions.
  • Contact the museum and the monastery in advance to confirm visiting arrangements, any tickets, and updated directions.
  • Arrange a car with driver or a taxi with agreed waiting time: the monastery is outside Tulcea city center and getting back on your own could be complicated.
