The itinerary alternates Tulcea’s urban heritage with two days dedicated to the waterways and settlements of the Danube Delta. On the first day, visit the city center and the historic complex on the hill; the second is an organized boat excursion to Canal 36, Mila 23, and Letea Forest. The third includes Sulina and the return to Tulcea to end with the cathedral: to follow this sequence within the same day, you need to book and confirm in advance a compatible return connection. Durations, fares, and transport availability may vary depending on the season and Delta conditions.

Getting to know the Delta’s ecosystems and the city’s main historic sights.
10:00
Danube Delta Eco-Tourism Center
Spend about 1–2 hours exploring the exhibits on the Delta, its wildlife, and the different wetlands: the visit helps you better understand the landscapes you’ll see by boat. From the city center, it’s just a few minutes on foot, depending on your starting point. Budget roughly 10–30 RON for admission; check prices and availability on the official website.
It’s a good introductory stop before heading out on Delta excursions.
12:30
Independence Monument
Reach the hill with an uphill walk, allowing about 25–35 minutes from the center, or take a local taxi and continue on foot in the monument area. Allow 30–45 minutes to take in the complex and the view over the city and the Danube; access to the outdoor area is generally free, while any additional costs or services should be checked on site.
Bring water and comfortable shoes: the route includes steep sections and steps.
14:00
Museum of History and Archaeology
Visit the museum, located in the Independence Monument area, to learn more about ancient history and the archaeological heritage of the region. Allow about 1–1,5 hours and expect 10–30 RON for admission as a rough estimate. For opening hours, any exhibitions, and tickets, check the official website before your visit.
You can have lunch in the center before heading up the hill; leave extra time for the transfer.
Explore the Delta by boat and combine village life with a guided visit to Letea Forest.
07:00
Boat trip on Channel 36
Depart from Tulcea harbor on a pre-booked excursion, specifying that the itinerary should continue to Mila 23 and Letea; navigation time varies depending on the boat, route, and river conditions. Along the way, observe the channels, reeds, and birdlife without approaching the nests. Expect roughly 250–600 RON per person for a more complex excursion, with the amount depending on duration and number of participants; confirm the route, costs, and conditions with the operator.
Ask for explicit confirmation that the itinerary includes Channel 36 and the subsequent transfers.
10:30
Traditional Village of Mila 23
Get off in Mila 23 for a stop of about 1–1.5 hours, to be agreed with the boatman: stroll among the houses and observe the village’s daily relationship with the waterways. A simple lunch or drink may cost roughly 40–100 RON, depending on the venue and your choice. The village is reachable only by water, so agree in advance on the departure point and time.
Respect the residents’ peace and ask permission before photographing people or property.
13:00
Letea Forest (Wild Horses)
Continue by boat toward the Letea area and arrange on site the transfer with an authorized local vehicle and guide, usually required to reach the forest trails. Allow at least 2–3 hours for transfer and visit; do not approach the horses and follow the guide’s instructions in the protected area. For the local vehicle and guide component, expect about 80–200 RON per person, plus the boat cost, to be confirmed with the organizer.
The visit depends on ground conditions and local logistics: agree on the return and duration in advance.
Discover Sulina and return to Tulcea in time to visit St. Nicholas Cathedral.
08:30
Town of Sulina
Reach Sulina by boat from Tulcea port: duration and schedules depend on the service chosen, so plan the visit only after confirming a return departure that fits within the same day. Once there, spend about 3–4 hours strolling through the center and along the waterfront, leaving time for a lunch break; allow roughly 100–350 RON per person for round-trip river transport, depending on the type of connection. Check availability, fares and schedules with the carrier or official operator.
Same-day return is not guaranteed by this itinerary: if you cannot find a suitable connection, change the sequence and plan for an overnight stay in Sulina.
16:30
St. Nicholas Cathedral
After returning to Tulcea port, head to the cathedral on foot or by taxi, depending on your actual arrival time, and set aside about 30–45 minutes for the visit. Entry may be free or involve donations, but do not assume access or arrangements: check the parish’s guidance and respect any services taking place. If the boat from Sulina is delayed, move this stop or skip it rather than forcing the schedule.
For a respectful visit, wear appropriate clothing and check in advance for any ceremonies.
