THE PLACES THAT TELL SIMI

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

All places on the map ↗

Gialos Harbor

The main harbor is Simi’s scenic heart, with neoclassical houses climbing the slopes around the bay. It is the perfect place for a stroll among cafés, shops, and moored boats.

This historic staircase links the harbor of Gialos to the upper district of Chorio. As you climb among the traditional houses, beautiful views open up over the harbor and the island landscape.

Simi Castle

At the top of Chorio are the remains of the Knights of St. John castle, built on the foundations of an ancient fortification. Its position offers sweeping views of the rooftops and the bay.

Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis

Overlooking a sheltered bay on the southwestern side of the island, it is one of the most important shrines in the Dodecanese. The complex is known for its bell tower, courtyards, and ecclesiastical museum.

Pedi Bay

This quiet bay, just a short distance from the center, is valued for its calm waters and relaxed atmosphere. Along the coast you will find small stretches of beach and tavernas overlooking the sea.

Agios Georgios Dysalonas Beach

Reached mainly by boat, this beach is famous for its towering rock face overlooking a small pebble bay. The clear waters make it one of the island’s most striking excursions.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

You reach Symi by ferry, mainly from Rhodes, and schedules can vary by season. To get around between the port of Gialos and the main settlements, there are buses and taxis, but services are limited: check the timetables and don’t assume you’ll find a taxi available. In summer, water taxis connect the port with several beaches. Gialos and Chorio are easy to explore on foot, but the climbs and stairways are demanding.

When to go

From May to October the weather is generally suitable for visiting the island and swimming. June and September are often a good compromise between pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds; July and August are hotter and busier. In spring and autumn some connections and services may be reduced, while in winter the island is quieter and several tourist activities may close.

Where to eat

In Gialos you’ll find numerous tavernas along the harbor, ideal for a meal with a view of the boats; in Chorio there are more intimate spots, often with a peaceful atmosphere. Look for fish and seafood, as well as Symi shrimp, a local specialty often served fried. During peak periods it’s worth booking dinner and checking the menu and prices before ordering.

Quick tips

  1. If you’re traveling in high season, book the ferry in advance and check the return times: they can change depending on the day and the season.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes with a good sole: between Gialos and Chorio there are many steps and uphill stretches.
  3. Carry cash for small purchases and transport, and ask in advance whether the place or service accepts cards.
  4. For beaches farther from the port, ask about water taxis, return times, and the availability of shade and water.
