Guide to Sikyon
SIKYON · ITINERARY

Sikyon (Korinthia, Peloponnese, Greece) in 3 days – Complete Itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Archaeology, history, sea, walks

This itinerary uses Kiato as a practical base and dedicates each day to a different area: the site of ancient Sikyon, the coastal town of Kiato, and the shoreline of Xylokastro. The first day focuses on the theatre, stadium, and archaeological finds, to be explored at a relaxed pace and with the museum’s opening confirmed in advance. The other two alternate seaside walks, stops at the harbors, and, in Xylokastro, the shady greenery of Pefkias Forest. Times and costs are indicative and may change with the season.

Day 1 – Ancient Sikyon: theater, stadium and museum

09:00–18:00 Cultural visits with moderate walks

Understand the importance of the ancient city through its public spaces and the artifacts preserved on site.

09:00

Departure from Kiato toward the archaeological area

Get to the site near Vasiliko by taxi or rental car: from central Kiato the trip is short, but local rides may be limited. Allow about 15–20 minutes and arrange your return if you don’t have your own transport.

Bring water, a hat, and shoes with soles suitable for uneven ground.

09:30

Visit to the Archaeological Site of Sikyon

Set aside about 45 minutes for the archaeological area and observe how the ruins fit into the hilly landscape. The entrance fee, if any, is typically around €5–€10; check the price and accessibility before you go.

Opening hours and access may vary; check the site’s official notices.

10:30

The ancient theater

Head to the Ancient Theatre of Sikyon, one of the most striking spots in the complex. Pause to take in the cavea and the orientation toward the landscape: allow about 30–40 minutes for your visit, with no need to rush.

11:20

The stadium and public spaces

Continue to the area of the Ancient Stadium of Sikyon and allow around half an hour to explore the visible remains. The visit is outdoors and the path may be uneven; services or shaded areas are not guaranteed.

12:15

Lunch in Vasiliko

Take a break in the village of Vasiliko, choosing a taverna or a place that’s open at the time. For a simple meal, budget roughly €12–€22 per person, drinks not included; ask whether there are any daily specials available.

14:00

Archaeological Museum of Sikyon

Allow about 60–90 minutes for the collections, which are useful for putting the monuments you’ve just visited into context and for recognizing materials and finds from the ancient city. Plan on an indicative admission fee of €3–€8, subject to changes and any concessions.

Check the opening hours and closing time: Greek archaeological museums may have seasonal schedules.

16:00

Return to Kiato and enjoy a quiet evening

Head back to Kiato with the agreed transport and take a break at your hotel. For dinner on the seafront or in the town center, budget around €15–€28 per person depending on dishes and drinks.

Day 2 – Kiato: station, harbor, and a walk along the gulf

09:00–20:30 Relaxed pace, mostly on foot

Discover everyday life in Kiato and enjoy the stretch of coastline without long transfers.

09:00

Breakfast and downtown Kiato

Start with breakfast in a café in the center, budgeting around €4–€8 per person. Then wander through the shopping streets and make your way to the station, which is also useful for getting your bearings if you arrived by train from Athens.

10:00

Kiato Railway Station

Make a short stop at the station and check the latest schedules for suburban rail connections for regional travel. This is an outside visit and does not require a ticket; buy tickets only if you plan to use the train.

10:45

Port of Kiato

Walk toward the port and watch the boats and the activity along the waterfront. This is a free stop of about 30–45 minutes, especially pleasant in the morning; bring water if the sun is strong.

12:00

Lunch by the sea

Choose a taverna or restaurant in the coastal area, where you can look for fish, salads, and Greek dishes. A typical lunch costs €15–€30 per person, with a wide difference between fish dishes and simpler options.

13:30

Kiato Beach

Spend the early afternoon at the town beach: you can swim, read, or take a stroll along the shoreline. Access to the beach is generally free; sunbeds and umbrellas, where available, may cost around €8–€18 for two places.

16:30

Walk along the seafront

Continue on foot along the waterfront for about an hour, alternating stops with short stretches in the water. The coast is partly pebbly, so beach shoes can make entering the sea more comfortable.

19:00

Aperitif and dinner in Kiato

Head back toward the center for a drink and dinner without any extra travel. Expect around €4–€8 for a drink and €15–€28 for dinner, depending on the place and menu choice.

Day 3 – Xylokastro between forest, beach, and port

09:00–19:00 Easy walks with a train transfer

End the trip with a day of nature and sea along the coast northwest of Kiato.

09:00

Transfer from Kiato to Xylokastro

Reach Xylokastro by train, if the day’s schedules work, or by car; the journey is short, but it’s best to plan ahead. Allow for an indicative cost of €3–€8 per leg by train, to be checked at the time of purchase.

10:00

Walk in Pefkias Forest

Explore the shady trails of the coastal Pefkias forest, known for its pine trees and proximity to the sea. Allow 60–90 minutes for a leisurely walk; the area is generally freely accessible.

11:45

Stop at Xylokastro Beach

Head to the beach for a break and, if the sea and conditions allow, a swim. Access is free, but the shore may be pebbly: bring a towel and suitable footwear.

13:00

Lunch in Xylokastro

Have lunch in the center or near the sea, choosing a tavern serving Greek cuisine. Allow roughly €14–€28 per person; in high season, it may be wise to book ahead or eat earlier.

14:30

Church of Agios Vlasios

Make a short visit to the Church of Agios Vlasios in the center of Xylokastro, respecting any services and dress rules. Opening hours may vary, and admission, when allowed, is usually free.

15:30

Xylokastro Port

Stroll to the port to take in the coastline and the boats; plan on about 30–45 minutes. This is an outdoor, free stop, also ideal for a photo break.

17:00

Final walk and return to Kiato

Set aside one last hour for a walk by the sea or a drink at a café, then return to Kiato by train or car. For a snack or a drink, allow €4–€10; double-check the last convenient connection before leaving the station area.

Estimated budget

Overnight stay for 2 nights in a double room, per person€70–€180
Meals and drinks for 3 days€90–€180
Admission to archaeological site and museum€8–€18
Local transport and regional transfers€20–€70

Practical tips

  • Check the museum and archaeological site opening hours in advance: opening times and fees may change depending on the season or public holidays.
  • For ancient Sikyon, it’s useful to have a car or arrange a taxi for the round trip, especially if you can’t find convenient local connections.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and closed-toe shoes for the archaeological terrain; in summer, plan outdoor visits during the cooler hours of the day.
  • Check the train schedules between Kiato and Xylokastro and plan your return before starting the walk.
