Worth seeing, worth remembering.
An old fortified village perched on the eastern coast, it preserves narrow alleys, historic houses, and spectacular sea views. Walking through its walls feels like crossing centuries of Cycladic history.
This small white church stands on a rocky islet at the foot of and can be reached by a scenic staircase. It is one of the island’s most photographed spots, especially at sunset.

Getting around
Buses connect port with and, especially in high season, with places like Artemonas, and the main beaches. Timetables and frequencies change depending on the period, so it’s worth checking the latest departures and not assuming there will be evening service. To explore coves and less-served villages, you can rent a car or scooter, taking care on the narrow, winding roads. Sifnos is also crossed by marked trails, ideal for discovering the island on foot. In summer, setting out early helps you avoid the hottest hours during excursions.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is generally mild and the island is less crowded, ideal conditions for walking and visiting the villages. July and August are the liveliest and hottest months, with more connections and services, but also higher demand for accommodation and rentals. In spring and autumn, it’s a good idea to check in advance whether restaurants and facilities are open and keep in mind that the meltemi can make the sea rough and affect ferries.
Where to eat
and Artemonas offer a good selection of tavernas and venues, while the coastal villages have convenient spots for a meal after the beach. Specialties worth trying include revithada, a slowly cooked chickpea soup, and mastelo, meat traditionally prepared with wine and dill. Also look for local cheeses such as manoura and typical sweets made with honey or almonds. In high season, especially in the evening, it’s wise to book ahead.
Quick tips
- 01Check the bus and ferry timetables on the day itself: they can vary depending on the season and sea conditions.
- 02If you plan to rent a vehicle in July or August, book it in advance and check the road conditions for your destination.
- 03Bring water, a hat and suitable shoes for the trails: shade can be limited, especially in the middle of the day.
- 04To taste local specialties, ask whether revithada is available that day and reserve a table at the more popular restaurants.
