BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

The metro is the fastest way to get around: the network is extensive, the signs are also in English, and the stations serve most of the main attractions. You can pay at the turnstiles with a transit card, buy a single ticket, or, where supported, use a payment app set up on your phone. For short trips, taxis and ride-hailing services are convenient, but during peak hours traffic can be heavy. Keep the destination address written in Chinese, especially if you take a taxi. and some central districts are pleasantly explored on foot, being mindful of crossings.

When to go

Spring and autumn, especially April-May and October-November, generally offer mild temperatures and pleasant conditions for exploring the city. Summer is hot and humid, with possible heavy rain and typhoons; winter can be cold and damp. Check the forecast before you travel and bear in mind that during major Chinese holidays, transport and attractions can be very crowded.

Where to eat

To sample the local cuisine, look for xiaolongbao, steamed dumplings filled with broth, and shengjianbao, pan-fried stuffed buns. In restaurants and small eateries you’ll also find noodles, fish dishes, and regional specialties; in autumn, hairy crab is traditional. Central neighborhoods and streets packed with venues offer options for every budget, but in the most popular places it’s best to arrive early or book ahead. If you have allergies or dietary needs, bring a note translated into Chinese to show the staff.

Quick tips

  1. Install the payment and transport apps you plan to use before you travel, and make sure they accept your payment method.
  2. Bring the address of your accommodation written in Chinese with you: it can be useful for taxis and drivers.
  3. In China, many foreign online services may not be accessible; find out in advance about alternatives and the local rules regarding connectivity.
  4. In markets and crowded venues, keep your phone, documents, and wallet safe.
