SCOPELO · ITINERARY

Skopelos (Sporades, Thessaly, Greece) in 1 day – Complete itinerary

1 day · Village, sea, cinema, views

The day combines the historic center of Skopelos, a stop on the western coast, and two places in the north of the island, alternating walks and car transfers. To stay on schedule and keep travel times manageable, it’s advisable to have a car or a pre-booked taxi: the roads are narrow and winding, and public transport may involve waiting. Driving times are approximate and may vary depending on traffic and road conditions. Check official channels for any updated access details, services, and information before setting off.

Day 1 – From Chora to the views of the north

10:00–21:00 Moderate, with car transfers and scenic stops

Discover Skopelos town and, on a loop route to the west and north, reach Kastani Beach, the church on the headland, and Glossa.

10:00

Skopelos Chora (Skopelos Town)

Set aside about 2 hours for the town center, exploring on foot through the uphill lanes, whitewashed facades, stairways, and viewpoints over the harbor; comfortable shoes are useful on the cobblestones. For the next stop, allow about 25–35 minutes by car toward the west, depending on traffic and your starting point. Walking around the village usually does not require a ticket, while coffee or breakfast may cost roughly 4–10 € per person.

Park in the designated spaces on the outskirts of the center and continue on foot; check the local signage.

12:30

Kastani Beach

Allow around 1 hour and 45 minutes for a break by the sea, a walk along the bay, and a swim if sea conditions and facilities allow; the beach is also known for scenes from the film Mamma Mia!. From here, the transfer to Agios Ioannis Kastri takes approximately 50–70 minutes by car, via winding inland roads. Access to the beach may be free, while drinks, snacks, or any paid services may cost roughly €5–20 per person.

Bring water, sun protection, and suitable shoes for getting around on the beach; check on site for the availability and prices of services.

15:30

Agios Ioannis Kastri Church

Set aside about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the headland, climb the rock-cut staircase, and admire the chapel and the sea views. The climb requires care and is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties; also allow time for parking and walking. Any access to the chapel and visiting arrangements should be checked through official channels; do not assume costs or opening times. To reach Glossa, count on about 20–30 minutes by car.

Avoid the climb in intense heat or strong winds and bring water; respect the religious character of the site.

18:00

Glossa Village

Spend the late afternoon on a walk of about 2 hours through narrow lanes, traditional houses, and glimpses of the port of Loutraki and the nearby islands; the hills and steps make a leisurely pace worthwhile. You can stop for dinner or an aperitif: expect roughly 15–30 € per person for a simple meal, depending on the venue and your choices. To return to Chora, it usually takes about 30–40 minutes by car, to be added if your overnight stay is in the main town.

Check the return route and transport availability in advance, especially if you don't have a car.

Practical tips

  • To cover all the stops in a single day, consider a rental car or a taxi arranged in advance; check insurance, parking, and road conditions.
  • Check official websites and local authorities for up-to-date information on access, services, and visits, without relying on unconfirmed schedules.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: the stairs to the church and walks through the villages can be exposed to the sun.
  • Leave some extra time for transfers: distances may look short on paper, but winding roads and parking stops can make the journey longer.
