Chora of Skopelos

The island’s main town is a maze of alleys, stone steps, and traditional houses climbing from the harbor up toward the hill. Stop in the little squares and tavernas to take in its lively atmosphere.

Venetian Castle of Skopelos

At the top of the Chora lie the remains of the Venetian fortification, in a panoramic spot overlooking the harbor and the sea. A walk along the ancient walls offers especially striking views at sunset.

Monastery of Evangelistria

This historic monastery stands on the hills above the town, surrounded by greenery and known for its traditional architecture and frescoes. The complex offers lovely views of the Chora and the coast.

Stafylos Beach

A short distance from the Chora, Stafylos is a sheltered bay with clear waters and a pebbled beach. It’s a convenient choice for combining a beach day with a visit to the island’s main town.

Panormos Beach

Overlooking the western coast, Panormos is a wide, sheltered bay prized for its pebbles and transparent waters. The nearby bars and tavernas make it ideal for spending the whole day there.

Kastani Beach

Kastani is one of the island’s most famous beaches, with pale sand, turquoise sea, and pine trees reaching almost to the shore. The scenery is especially striking in the softer light of day.

Getting around

Skopelos has no airport: it is reached by ferry, usually from Skiathos, Volos, or Mantoudi on the island of Euboea. Arrivals are at Skopelos Town port or at Glossa-Loutraki; check which stop your ferry serves. In summer, buses connect the main towns and some beaches, but routes and frequencies change depending on the season. To explore coves and villages more freely, you can rent a car or scooter: the roads are often narrow and winding, so drive carefully.

When to go

From May to October, the weather is generally suitable for enjoying beaches and outdoor trips. June and September often bring warm days and a more relaxed atmosphere than July and August, when the island is busier and it is best to book in advance. In spring and autumn, some services and connections may be less frequent; check timetables before you leave.

Where to eat

In Skopelos Town and Glossa, you’ll find tavernas and other eateries, while along the coast there are convenient options near some beaches. Try Skopelos cheese pie, often made in a spiral shape, as well as fish and seasonal Greek dishes. The island’s plums are also a typical ingredient in some savory recipes. In high season, especially in the evening, it can be useful to book.

Check ferry timetables and any changes of port: they may vary depending on the season and sea conditions.
If you’re traveling in summer, book your ferry, accommodation, and rental car well in advance.
Bring shoes suitable for trails and pebble beaches, and keep in mind that some coves require a walk.
For trips by car or scooter, fill up whenever you can and drive cautiously on mountain roads.
