The itinerary is based in Pigadia and is organized by area: the first day is devoted to the capital and the southern surroundings, the second to the villages of the north, and the third to the beaches on the eastern coast. A rental car offers the greatest flexibility, especially for reaching Olympos and the bays; the roads are often narrow and winding, so it is wise to allow more travel time than the distance might suggest. Museum, taverna, and ferry schedules can vary by season: check them before departure.
Day 1 · Walking · 10.2 km · 124 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the capital, the archaeological traces along the coast, and a traditional village before ending the day by the sea.
09:00
Walk in Pigadia
Start at the port and follow the waterfront promenade, passing fishing boats, cafés and the old town’s side streets. Allow about an hour for the walk and breakfast; a coffee with something to eat typically costs €5–10 per person.
Pigadia is a convenient base for getting around by car or on local buses.
10:30
Karpathos Archaeological Museum
Visit the rooms dedicated to the island’s history and to finds from local archaeological sites. Allow 45–75 minutes; admission may be free or charged at a modest rate, typically €2–5, but opening hours and prices vary depending on the season.
Check opening times, especially outside the summer months.
12:00
Agia Fotini and the remains of the basilica
Head to the coastal area south of the port to see the remains of the early Christian basilica of Agia Fotini. The visit is short and takes place mostly outdoors: bring water and suitable shoes for uneven ground.
The area is exposed to the sun and does not always have facilities.
13:00
Lunch in Pigadia
Head back to the center for a relaxed lunch in a taverna, choosing island dishes, fish, or mezedes. Budget around 15–28 € per person, depending on the catch and the type of venue.
Ask for the price of the fish by weight before ordering it.
15:00
Menetes
By car, reach Menetes in about 20–30 minutes, climbing up toward the village perched on the slopes. Wander among the traditional houses and scenic viewpoints; allow about an hour, with photo stops and a short break in the square.
The streets in the center are narrow: park in the designated spaces at the entrance.
17:00
Swimming at Amoopi Beach
From Menetes, continue to Amoopi in about 15–20 minutes by car. Choose one of the coves for a swim and some relaxation; umbrellas and sun loungers, when available, can cost roughly 10–25 € per couple.
Bring reef shoes: some areas have rocky seabeds.
19:30
Return and dinner in Pigadia
Head back to the capital in about 15–20 minutes and end the day with a walk along the harbor. For dinner in a taverna, budget roughly 18–30 € per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the venue.
In high season, it’s a good idea to book a table for dinner on the seafront.
Explore Olympos and its traditions, then continue to Diafani on the northeastern coast.
08:00
Departure from Pigadia
Set off early by car: the drive to Olympos usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes–2 hours, depending on traffic and stops. The road is scenic but winding; fill up the tank and consider a short break along the way.
Drive carefully and do not plan your transfers based on the shortest times shown by the GPS.
10:00
Walking tour of the village of Olympos
Spend at least an hour among the alleys, colorful houses, and viewpoints of the village, known for preserving traditional customs and architecture. Step into the shops and look at the traditional clothing, while respecting residents’ privacy.
The center is best explored on foot and includes hills and uneven paving.
11:30
Olympos Folklore Museum
If open, visit the ethnographic museum to learn about household items, costumes, and local traditions. Allow around 45 minutes; admission, if any, is typically just a few euros, and opening hours may be reduced or seasonal.
Check the opening hours on site, as they may depend on the season and local management.
12:30
Lunch in Olympos
Stop at a village taverna and try local specialties, such as handmade pasta or home-style dishes. A simple meal costs roughly €15–25 per person; timings may be longer during busy periods.
Ask which dishes are available that day.
14:30
Transfer to Diafani
Drive down to Diafani, allowing about 20–30 minutes for the trip. The port is a small seaside settlement: stroll along the waterfront and watch the boats and local life, without straying too far if you have a scheduled departure.
Boat trips to beaches or coves depend on the season and sea conditions.
16:00
Break on the Diafani waterfront
Set aside some time for a coffee or a swim near the village, if sea conditions are suitable. A coffee or a drink costs roughly €3–6; for boat excursions, check directly at the port for the route, duration, and fare.
Do not assume connections are available outside the peak season.
17:30
Return to Pigadia
Leave with enough daylight for the return journey, which can take about 1 hour and 45 minutes–2 hours. Plan a stop if needed and arrive in Pigadia in the evening for a light dinner.
Driving after dark requires extra caution on the bends and in the less well-lit stretches.
Visit an inland village and devote the rest of the day to the most famous bays on the east coast.
08:30
Departure and stop in Aperi
Reach Aperi in about 20–30 minutes from Pigadia and take a walk through the village streets, traditionally linked to the island’s history. A 45–60 minute stop is enough to see the center and enjoy the scenery.
Have breakfast before leaving or bring water and a snack with you.
10:00
Transfer to Apella Beach
Continue by car to Apella, allowing about 30–40 minutes from Aperi and more if traffic is heavy. The final descent requires care: once you arrive, choose a safe place to park and walk down to the beach in suitable shoes.
In peak season, parking can fill up: arriving in the morning is a good strategy.
10:45
Swim and stop at Apella Beach
Spend at least a couple of hours in the bay to swim and admire the clear water and mountain scenery. Facilities may be limited or seasonal; bring water, sunscreen, and a snack.
Check sea conditions and do not rely on natural shade being available.
13:15
Simple lunch and transfer
Have lunch with what you brought or choose an available spot in the area, if open. Allow 8–18 € for a snack or a simple meal; reaching Kyra Panagia takes roughly 25–35 minutes by car.
Bringing water is especially important on hot days.
14:30
Kyra Panagia Beach
Reach the bay and admire the distinctive silhouette of the chapel overlooking the beach. Spend the afternoon swimming and taking a walk around the area; if available, renting sun loungers and an umbrella may cost around 10–25 € per pair.
The seabed can be rocky: water shoes are useful.
17:30
Return to Pigadia
Head back in about 35–45 minutes, leaving time for traffic and scenic stops. Take a shower and a break before your last evening in town.
Take any trash with you: not all coves have bins.
19:00
Final dinner in Pigadia
End your trip in the center of Pigadia with a tavern dinner and a stroll along the harbor. As a rough guide, expect €18–30 per person for dinner, depending on the dishes and drinks you choose.
