Getting around
To explore the beaches and villages of Karpathos, a rental car is often the most practical solution; in high season, it’s best to book in advance. The roads are partly narrow and winding, so it’s better to drive carefully and allow more time than expected. Buses connect with some destinations, but frequencies and routes can vary by season. The main port is in , while the airport is in the southern part of the island.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is generally pleasant and the island is less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August are ideal for the sea, but they bring more visitors and high temperatures; the meltemi can make some days windy. In spring and autumn, it’s also pleasant to visit the villages and go hiking, though it’s worth checking transport and service schedules in advance.
