SANTORINI · ITINERARY

Santorini (Thira, South Aegean, Greece) in 1 days – Complete itinerary

1 days / 0 nights · Caldera, villages, trekking, sunset

The day explores the most scenic stretch of Santorini’s western coast, from Fira to Oia, following much of the panoramic pedestrian route. In the morning, visit the museum and viewpoints in Fira, then continue on foot toward Imerovigli and the rocky promontory of Skaros. After a lunch break, the trail goes on to Oia, where the day ends among narrow lanes and sunset views. It’s a demanding itinerary, with about 14–16 km on foot in total and uneven sections: in case of intense heat or limited mobility, it’s a good idea to shorten the route by taking the bus between the villages.

Day 1 – From Fira to Oia along the caldera

08:30–21:00 Challenging, with trekking

Explore the western coast villages and viewpoints on foot, ending in Oia for sunset.

08:30

Archaeological Museum of Thera

Start in central Fira with a visit of about 45–60 minutes to the archaeological collections, useful for placing the island’s history in context before exploring its villages. Admission is generally in the range of €5–10, but hours and prices may vary; check whether it’s open that day. From here, the next viewpoint is about a 15-minute walk away.

Arrive when it opens and bring water with you: along the route north, shade is limited.

09:45

Three Bells of Fira

Make your way to the church of Agios Theodoros, famous for its three bells and blue dome overlooking the caldera. Allow about 20–30 minutes for photos and views of the volcano; access to the outdoor area is free. Continue on foot along the coastal path toward Firostefani and Imerovigli.

Respect private spaces and signs: many paths pass through inhabited areas.

10:15

Scenic walk to Imerovigli

Follow the pedestrian route from Fira through Firostefani to Imerovigli, allowing about 60–75 minutes with photo stops. The trail alternates between paved sections, steps, and short uneven stretches, with uninterrupted views of the caldera. The walk is free, while a short coffee break may cost around €3–6.

Wear shoes with good grip: smooth sandals are not suitable for the steps and rough patches.

11:30

Imerovigli

Explore the village’s lanes at a leisurely pace, known for its elevated position and sweeping views over the crater. A break of about 30 minutes lets you admire the Cycladic architecture and get your bearings before heading off toward Skaros. Admission is free; drinks and small snacks at local spots are priced at around €4–10.

Fill your water bottle before tackling the climb down and back up to the rocky outcrop.

12:00

Skaros Rock

Follow the marked trail down to the rock formation, an ancient fortified site with wide views over the sea and the village. Allow about 60–90 minutes for the round trip, exploration, and return, and avoid the most exposed sections if you don’t feel confident. Access is free; there are no facilities on the promontory.

The route has steep steps and uneven stones: don’t push yourself along the edges and skip the descent if the wind is strong.

13:45

Lunch and the trail to Oia

Return to Imerovigli for lunch and a rest, allowing about 45–60 minutes and an estimated spend of €15–30 per person. Then continue on the scenic trail north: the stretch to Oia is long and usually takes 2.5–3.5 hours, depending on pace, heat, and stops. Bring at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person and consider taking a bus from Imerovigli if conditions are not favorable; the ticket costs about €2–4.

The trail is not fully shaded and can be tiring: check the forecast and don’t set off if you’re already tired.

18:30

Oia and Oia Castle

Once you arrive in Oia, stroll among the whitewashed houses and historic center pathways to the castle ruins, one of the best-known spots for watching the sunset. Access is free, but the area gets very crowded in the evening: allow at least 60–90 minutes to reach the viewpoint and find a place without rushing. After sunset, head to the Oia bus station and return to Fira on a ride of about 25–40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Bus schedules change depending on the season and day; check the last departure before setting out on the hike.

Estimated budget

Admission to the Archaeological Museum of Thera€5–10 per person
Oia–Fira bus, possible alternative Imerovigli–Oia segment€2–4 per ride
Breakfast, coffee and water€8–18 per person
Lunch in a taverna or casual eatery€15–30 per person
Light dinner or a snack in Oia€12–25 per person

Indicative estimates in euros, the official currency of Greece; prices, museum fees and transport may vary depending on the season and the operator. The budget does not include accommodation, taxis, shopping or any drinks or meals at the scenic venues.

Practical tips

  • Check the museum and bus schedules on the same day: frequencies and opening hours may vary by season.
  • Set off with hiking shoes or walking shoes with good grip, a hat, sunscreen, and enough water for the entire route.
  • The Fira–Oia trail is long and partly exposed: in intense heat, strong wind, or if you’re tired, shorten the walk by using the bus between the villages.
  • Sunset draws big crowds to Oia; get to the castle early and plan your return to Fira in advance.
