Renowned for its white alleys and windmills, offers some of the most iconic views over the caldera. Sunset draws many visitors, but the village is also enchanting at quieter times of day.

One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Santorini wins visitors over with its whitewashed houses, blue domes, and sweeping views over the volcanic caldera. From ancient archaeological sites to beaches of striking colors and dramatic villages, the island offers memorable experiences in every season.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Akrotiri archaeological site
This Minoan city was buried by the volcanic eruption of the 2nd millennium BC and preserved beneath layers of ash. Walkways let you observe the buildings and streets of the ancient settlement.
Ancient Thera archaeological site
On the slopes of Mount Mesa Vouno lie the remains of an ancient city with sanctuaries, houses, and public spaces. Its elevated position also offers wide views over the island’s eastern coast.
Museum of Prehistoric Thera
In the center of Fira, the museum houses finds mainly from the excavations at Akrotiri. Through frescoes, pottery, and everyday objects, it tells the story of the island before the great eruption.
Near Akrotiri, this beach is famous for the towering reddish cliffs that contrast with the blue sea. The landscape is striking, and the visit is especially enjoyable on clear days.
Monastery of Prophet Elias
Located on Santorini’s highest peak, this historic monastery dominates much of the island. On clear days, the panorama stretches across the villages, vineyards, and surrounding sea.

Getting around
KTEL buses connect Fira with the airport, the port, and the main towns, but services can be crowded in peak season. Fira is the main hub: check updated timetables, especially in the evening and outside the summer months. Renting a car or scooter offers more freedom, but the roads are narrow and traffic is heavy; check parking conditions in advance. Taxis are few and can be hard to find at busy times. To explore the settlements, it is often best to continue on foot.
When to go
Spring and early autumn, especially from April to June and from September to October, offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with prices generally higher: book accommodation and transport in advance. In winter the island is quieter, but some tourist services and connections may be reduced.
Where to eat
In Fira and the main villages, you’ll find taverns and restaurants for a range of budgets; for a more relaxed meal, also consider places away from the most popular viewpoints. Try local specialties such as Santorini fava, tomato fritters, and white eggplant, paired with an island wine, such as Assyrtiko. Places with views of the caldera are especially in demand at sunset: book ahead and check the menu and prices.
Quick tips
- 01If you arrive by ferry, check in advance how to reach your accommodation: the port is at the bottom of a steep, busy road.
- 02Bring comfortable, non-slip shoes: many roads are steep and paths can be uneven.
- 03In summer, protect yourself from the sun with water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially during walks in the middle of the day.
- 04To enjoy the sunset in peace, get to your chosen spot well in advance or pick a village less crowded than Oia.
Wake up in the right place.
