3 days / 2 nights · History, archaeology, monasteries, sea
Salamina lends itself to a slow-paced itinerary, built around the port of Paloukia, the island's main town, and its coasts. The first day is dedicated to the center and Faneromeni Monastery; the second follows the eastern coast past Ambelakia, Kynosoura, and the beaches; the third reaches the cave associated with Euripides and the bay of Kanakia. A car makes getting around easier, while the ferry from Perama lets you reach the island without going through Piraeus.
Day 1 · Walking · 15.3 km · 164 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Get acquainted with the island, visit the archaeological museum, and end the day at the Faneromeni Monastic Complex.
10:00
Arrival at the port of Paloukia
The crossing from Perama is short and frequent, but schedules change: check the day’s departures before setting off. With a car on board, you can quickly reach the rest of the island; allow roughly 5–8 € for the vehicle and possible additional charges for passengers.
If you arrive on foot, check taxi or bus options: frequencies and connections may be limited.
11:00
Walk through the center of Salamina
Drive to the capital and leave the car in a public parking lot or on a side street. Spend about an hour exploring the central streets and seafront, taking in the island’s daily rhythm and stopping for a coffee: a drink usually costs 2–5 €.
The center is more pleasant during the cooler hours; wear comfortable shoes for the sloping streets.
12:15
Salamina Archaeological Museum
Visit the museum to get oriented in the island’s history and see artifacts found in the area before exploring outdoor sites in the following days. Allow about 45–75 minutes; admission may be free or ticketed, roughly 0–6 €, depending on current regulations.
Check opening days and hours: local museums may have reduced or seasonal schedules.
13:45
Lunch in the capital
Choose a central taverna and order fish dishes, meze, or Greek specialties to share. A simple lunch costs about 12–22 € per person, drinks excluded; ask for the catch of the day and where it comes from.
In high season, it is wise to book ahead, especially on weekends.
16:00
Faneromeni Monastery
Drive to the monastery from the center, allowing about 15–25 minutes depending on traffic and your starting point. Visit the church and accessible areas respectfully, lingering over the icons and the quiet atmosphere of the complex; admission is usually free, with an optional donation.
Wear modest clothing and check opening times in advance: access to buildings may be restricted.
18:30
Return and dinner on the seafront
Head back toward the island’s main town for an evening stroll and a leisurely dinner. Allow about 18–30 € per person for a full meal at a taverna, depending on fish, wine, and the choice of venue.
If you’re staying near Paloukia, allow 15–25 minutes of driving for the return trip.
Deepen your understanding of Salamina’s connection to the naval battle and alternate historical stops with a break by the sea.
09:00
Departure for Ambelakia
Drive to Ambelakia and spend the morning in the old harbor area, traditionally linked to the ancient city of Salamina. The archaeological traces are partly fragmentary and open-air: take in the landscape and the shape of the coast rather than expecting a large monumental site; free admission.
Bring water and sunscreen: there may be little shade on site and signage is not always plentiful.
10:30
Kynosoura and the landscape of the battle
Continue to the Kynosoura peninsula, a useful vantage point for understanding the geography of the strait and the context of the Battle of Salamina in 480 BC. The visit is mainly scenic and takes about 45–60 minutes; no ticket is required to explore the public area.
Do not enter private property or industrial areas, and respect local signage.
12:00
Stop in Selinia
Head to Selinia for a stroll along the seafront and a break at one of the local cafés or bakeries. Allow 60–90 minutes and about 4–10 € for a late breakfast or snack; the short distance between stops makes this a relaxed pace.
Ask on site which stretches of coastline are suitable for swimming and where it is allowed to stop.
13:30
Lunch between Selinia and Ambelakia
Stop at a tavern on the eastern coast for a meal of meze, Greek salad or fish. Expect around 15–25 € per person, with significant variation for fresh fish; lunch can last about an hour and a half.
Compare the posted prices before ordering fish sold by weight.
16:00
Swimming at Kaki Vigla
Drive to Kaki Vigla, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes from the Selinia area. The beach is a good place to swim and rest after sightseeing: access to the sea is normally free, while sun loungers or food and drinks, if available, are paid separately.
Bring reef shoes and check sea conditions; facilities may be seasonal.
19:00
Return and sunset on the coast
Wrap up with a short scenic stop along the coastal road, choosing a safe place to park without obstructing traffic. Then head back to your accommodation: depending on the area, allow 20–35 minutes of driving.
Avoid stopping on bends or narrow embankments and do not leave valuables visible in the car.
Explore the southwestern part of the island, combining the site associated with Euripides with a long stop on Kanakia beach.
09:00
Departure for Peristeria
After breakfast, drive to the Peristeria area and the cave known as the Cave of Euripides. Tradition links the place to the playwright, but the visit should also be understood as an archaeological and landscape experience: it is not a fully equipped museum and access may depend on local conditions.
Ask for up-to-date directions in the village and do not venture onto rough trails without suitable footwear.
10:00
Visit to the Cave of Euripides
Allow about 60–90 minutes for the walk and to take in the site, leaving time to get your bearings without rushing. Access to the outdoor area is generally free; do not assume that every area can be visited or that there are facilities and staff on site.
Bring water, a hat, and a flashlight only as backup: do not enter closed or unmarked cavities.
11:45
Transfer to Kanakia
Reach Kanakia by car, allowing about 15–25 minutes depending on the road and conditions. The route passes through a greener, less urbanized part of the island: drive carefully and keep in mind that services become scarcer as you move away from built-up areas.
Refuel and buy water before leaving the better-served areas.
12:15
Swimming and relaxation at Kanakia Beach
Choose a suitable stretch for swimming and spend a few hours here between a swim, shade, and walks along the shore. The beach is normally free; bring a towel, water, and something to eat, as facilities may be limited or seasonal.
Check the wind and sea conditions before entering the water, especially if the beach is not well supervised.
14:00
Packed lunch or a taverna in the area
To avoid detours, plan a packed lunch or choose an open taverna nearby, checking the opening hours in advance. A simple meal costs roughly 10–20 € per person; a fish lunch can cost more than that.
In the low season, the choice of open venues may be reduced.
16:30
Final walk and return
End with a short walk along the coast and head back with enough time to reach Paloukia or your accommodation. From the Kanakia area, the journey can take about 30–45 minutes, depending on the destination and road conditions.
If you need to board, check the ferry schedule and arrive at the port early, especially on weekends.
