Worth seeing, worth remembering.

All places on the map ↗

Archaeological Museum of Salamina

A useful stop to learn about the island’s long history through artifacts and archaeological evidence. The visit helps place the ancient sites scattered across the area in context.

Faneromeni Monastery

This historic monastery is one of the most important places of worship on Salamina, also known for its frescoes and peaceful atmosphere. It is set in a quiet area, ideal for a stop away from the center.

Euripides Cave

Located near Peristeria, the cave is linked by tradition to the playwright Euripides. The site combines historical and archaeological interest with a striking natural setting.

Archaeological site of ancient Salamina

In the Ambelakia area, you can find the remains of the ancient settlement, with evidence of buildings and harbor structures. It is one of the best places to imagine life on the island in antiquity.

Kynosoura Tumulus

This funerary monument is located on the Kynosoura peninsula, in the area associated with the famous naval battle of Salamina. The visit can be combined with a scenic route along the coast.

Kanakia Beach

A bay appreciated for its green landscape and clear waters, ideal for a swim after cultural visits. The area retains a quieter atmosphere than the island’s inhabited centers.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

The most practical connection to the mainland is the ferry between Perama and Paloukia, which also carries cars; check the updated schedules before setting off. Once on the island, a car or scooter is handy for reaching beaches and less-served areas. There are also local buses, but frequencies and connections can be limited, especially outside the high season. For short trips, you may want to consider taxis and local services.

When to go

Spring and the beginning of autumn are ideal for exploring the island, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is the best time for the sea, but it can be hot and busier, especially on weekends. In winter, the climate is quieter and many seasonal activities may have reduced hours.

Where to eat

In the coastal resorts and towns, you’ll find tavernas and restaurants serving Greek cuisine, often with fish and seafood, as well as grilled dishes and mezedes to share. For a simple meal, look for psarotaverna and trattorias frequented by locals. In summer, it’s advisable to book at the most popular places and check opening hours, which may vary depending on the season.

Quick tips

  1. Check the ferry schedules and consider possible queues on summer weekends.
  2. If you want to visit beaches and less-served areas, consider bringing a car or renting one.
  3. In summer, bring water, a hat, and sun protection: shade can be limited on the beaches.
  4. Check bus, restaurant, and service hours in advance, especially outside the high season.
