One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Pyrgos is the urban heart of Ilia, a lively and authentic city from which to set out and explore the Ionian coast and some of the most famous places of ancient Greece. With museums, churches, and historic architecture, it offers a pleasant taste of everyday Greek life, just a short distance from Katakolo and Olympia.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
A surprising museum devoted to the inventions of antiquity, presented through working reconstructions and accessible explanations. The exhibits show just how advanced the technical knowledge of the Greeks was.
A historic city theater, it is one of Pyrgos’ main cultural landmarks and a testament to the local architecture’s neoclassical style. Its central location makes it easy to include in a walk through the city.
The picturesque port of Katakolo is a lovely seaside spot, with waterfront strolls, tavernas, and views of fishing boats. It is also the starting point for many excursions to Olympia.
The ancient Olympic Games were born in the sanctuary of Olympia: among temples, the gymnasium, and the stadium, you can feel the grandeur of one of the most important places in the Greek world. The archaeological site is one of the must-see excursions from Pyrgos.
This historic monastery stands in a peaceful setting near the Ionian coast and preserves a long religious tradition. A visit offers a striking contrast with the lively shoreline nearby.

Getting around
The center of Pyrgos is easy to explore on foot, although some streets are uphill. To reach nearby places, such as Olympia or the beaches along the coast, you can use the regional KTEL buses, checking timetables and connections in advance. A rental car offers more freedom to explore Ilia, especially outside the towns. Taxis are also available in the city.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are pleasant times to visit Pyrgos and the inland area, with generally milder temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. In July and August, the heat can be intense, but the season is ideal for combining your visit with the beaches of the Ionian coast. Winter is cooler and wetter: bring clothing suitable for rainfall.
Where to eat
In the center of Pyrgos, you’ll find tavernas and casual spots where you can try Greek cuisine and products from Ilia, an agricultural region known for olive oil, vegetables, and fruit. Look for daily specials made with seasonal ingredients and grilled specialties. If you head toward the coast, you can also find fish and seafood; ask what the fresh suggestions of the day are.
Quick tips
- 01Check KTEL bus schedules before you leave: frequency and connections can vary depending on the season.
- 02If you want to visit Olympia and the nearby beaches, consider renting a car so you can arrange your trips with greater flexibility.
- 03In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially during visits in the hottest hours.
- 04In restaurants, ask about the daily specials and local dishes: they often showcase Ilia’s seasonal produce.
