Day 1 – From the wetlands of Pydna to the hills of Kolindros

10:00–21:00 Moderate, with car transfers and short walks

Discover the nature and archaeology of the coast, then head to Kolindros for a walk through its historic center.

10:00

Observing the Nea Agathoupoli wetland

Drive to the accessible panoramic viewpoints in the wetland and spend about 45 minutes observing the lagoon landscape and birds, with binoculars if available. Stay on permitted roads and trails: some areas are protected and not all are open to the public. Free scenic stop.

Bring water and sun protection; for better wildlife spotting, go in the early hours of the day.

11:15

Visit to the archaeological site of ancient Pydna

In about 20–30 minutes of driving you will reach the site, near the coast of Makrygialos. Spend 60–75 minutes exploring the visible remains and the surrounding landscape, remembering that in 168 BC the battle that marked the end of the independent Macedonian kingdom took place here. Accessibility and the possible opening of visitor facilities may vary; allow for an indicative cost of 0–10 € per person, to be checked.

Wear closed shoes: the ground can be uneven and shade is limited.

12:45

Lunch and a stroll in Makrygialos

Reach the coastal center in just a few minutes by car and stop at a taverna for fish, meze, or Greek daily specials. Allow about an hour and a half for lunch and a short walk along the waterfront; a simple meal can cost roughly 12–25 € per person, drinks not included.

Ask for the catch of the day and check whether the cover charge or bread is charged separately.

14:45

Panoramic view over the Kitros salt pans

Drive to Alikes Kitrous, allowing about 15–20 minutes for the transfer and a 30–40 minute stop. The salt pans and coastal flats are interesting for their colors, water mirrors, and birdlife; observe them only from public viewpoints, without entering the facilities or processing areas. The stop is free.

Do not follow dirt roads if conditions are muddy or if signs prohibit access.

15:45

Transfer to Kolindros

Allow about 45–55 minutes of driving from the coast to the center of Kolindros, with times varying depending on traffic and the route chosen. The road climbs inland through Pieria: drive carefully on the winding stretches and plan a short break if needed. Fuel and parking depend on the vehicle and the starting point.

Set the destination on your GPS before leaving the coast: in the countryside, mobile coverage can be patchy.

16:45

Walk through the center of Kolindros

Park near the center and stroll leisurely through the town’s streets, admiring the traditional houses, squares, and views over the hills. Set aside about an hour for an unhurried visit; the experience is mainly scenic and does not require entrance tickets.

The streets can be steep or cobbled: choose comfortable shoes.

18:00

Stop at the historic church of Agios Georgios

End your walk at the Church of Agios Georgios, an important religious and historical landmark of the town. Check on site whether it is open: opening hours may depend on services and local availability; if accessible, enter with respectful clothing and look around inside without taking photos where prohibited. Visit is generally free.

If the church is closed, enjoy the stop from outside and ask locals whether any openings are planned.

19:00

Dinner and the end of the day

Stop at a taverna in Kolindros or nearby for a Macedonian-style dinner, with grilled dishes, salads, and local specialties. Budget roughly 15–30 € per person, depending on courses and drinks; after dinner, allow time for the return trip, which will depend on your destination.

In a small town, some places may keep seasonal hours: call ahead or ask in advance.

Practical tips

  • To easily connect the coast and the inland areas, a car is strongly recommended; check fuel and route in advance.
  • Please check locally for the archaeological site's opening times and entrance fees: hours may change depending on the season and management.
  • In wetlands and near the salt flats, stay on public paths and respect any access restrictions.
  • Bring water, a hat and suitable shoes: many scenic stretches are exposed to the sun and have no facilities.
