Platanias is a convenient base for discovering western Crete’s coast and Chania’s historic center without changing accommodation. The itinerary is organized by area: first the nearby beaches, then the city, the Akrotiri peninsula and the major excursions to Balos and Elafonissi. The busiest days are those by boat and along the southwestern coast; it’s best to tackle them with an early-morning start and by checking sea conditions and road accessibility in advance. Costs, opening times and tour availability are approximate and may vary depending on the season and operator.

Get to know Platanias and enjoy the nearby beaches without long transfers.
09:00
Walk at Platanias Beach
Spend the morning on the long beach of Platanias, alternating a swim with a stroll along the shore. In summer, some areas have paid sunbeds and umbrellas: expect roughly €10–20 for two sunbeds and an umbrella.
The sea can be rough: check flags and notices before swimming.
11:30
War Shelter of Platanias
Walk to the underground World War II shelter, an intimate site that tells the local story through rooms and information panels. The visit takes about 30–45 minutes; the entrance contribution, if any, is usually modest, around €2–5, but opening hours may be seasonal.
Check whether it is open that day, especially outside high season.
13:00
Lunch and a break in the center of Platanias
Stop at a taverna in the village to try Cretan salad, dakos, or grilled dishes. For a simple lunch, budget about €15–25 per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.
16:00
Agios Dimitrios Church
Head to Agios Dimitrios Church in the upper part of the village and admire the Orthodox architecture and the setting of the old settlement core. The climb is short but steep in places; visit with respectful attire and check that it is open to the public.
Bring water if you go up during the hottest hours.
17:30
Sunset between Agia Marina and Stalos
Make your way to Agia Marina Beach and continue, if you still have the energy, to Stalos Beach: these are nearby stretches of coast, reachable on foot along the shore or with short bus/taxi rides. Choose a spot for a swim and stay for the sunset light; sunbeds and refreshments vary, roughly €5–15.
Discover the historic center of Chania by following a compact route through the harbor, museums, and old neighborhoods.
09:00
Transfer and walk at the Old Venetian Harbour
Reach Chania from Platanias by bus or car: the journey takes about 25–40 minutes depending on traffic and stops. Start at the Venetian port, taking in the lighthouse, the quays, and the facades from different periods; the walk is free.
10:30
Firkas Fortress
Visit the fortress at the entrance to the harbor and step out onto the bastions for a beautiful view of the waterfront. Allow about 30–45 minutes; exhibition spaces and opening hours may change, so check the information on site.
The route along the bastions may be exposed to the sun.
11:30
Maritime Museum of Crete
Delve into the island’s naval history through models, maps, and artifacts, with sections ranging from antiquity to modern history. Allow about an hour and an estimated admission of €3–6, subject to changes and seasonal openings.
13:00
Lunch and the alleyways of the old town
Have lunch in the alleyways of the center and then stroll through the historic neighborhoods, pausing to admire doorways, courtyards, and workshops. For a tavern meal, budget approximately €18–30 per person.
15:00
Etz Hayyim Synagogue
Visit the historic synagogue in the Jewish quarter, an important testimony to Chania’s Romaniote community. The visit is short and respectful; access may depend on opening hours and community activities, so it is wise to check in advance.
16:30
Archaeological Museum of Chania
Head to Halepa to visit the archaeological museum, which houses finds from the Chania area and Minoan Crete. Allow 60–90 minutes and a suggested ticket price of €6–12; check closing days and updated rates before your visit.
The museum is outside the harbor core: allow about 10–15 minutes by taxi or bus.
Explore the monasteries of the Akrotiri peninsula and finish with a swim stop at Stavros.
08:30
Departure for the Akrotiri peninsula
With a rental car, you can reach Agia Triada in about 35–45 minutes from Platanias; public transport may require several transfers and is not ideal for connecting all the sites. Bring water, shoes with sturdy soles, and a hat for the outdoor stops.
09:15
Agia Triada Tzagaroli Monastery
Visit the Renaissance monastery, known for its facade, courtyard, and olive-grove setting. Allow about an hour and an approximate entrance fee of €2–5; modest dress and respect for the religious spaces are required.
Opening hours may vary depending on services and the season.
11:00
Gouverneto Monastery and the trail to Katholiko
Continue to Gouverneto Monastery and, if the trail is accessible and conditions allow, keep walking to Katholiko. The route is rocky and downhill, with stretches exposed to the sun: allow at least 2–3 hours round trip and do not attempt it in sandals.
14:30
Katholiko Monastery
Reach the ruins of the monastery, set in a striking gorge, and admire the ancient cave complex without crossing the marked areas. Make sure you have enough water for the return and take a break before getting back in the car.
If the trail is closed or it is too hot, limit your visit to the Gouverneto complex.
16:30
Stavros Beach and Venizelos Graves
On the way back to Chania, stop at Stavros Beach for a swim in the sheltered bay, then make a scenic stop at the Venizelos Graves, with views over the city and the coast. The beach is free, while parking and refreshments may involve varying costs; return to Platanias in about 30–40 minutes.
Visit Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island on an excursion departing from Kissamos.
07:30
Depart for Kissamos
Reach Kissamos from Platanias by car in about 45–60 minutes, or check buses and organized transfers. Book the boat to Balos and Gramvousa in advance: fares vary by season and service, typically €25–45 per person, often with taxes or extras charged separately.
08:30
Archaeological Museum of Kissamos
If opening hours match the boat departure, make time for a short visit to the archaeological museum to see finds from the ancient city and the surrounding area. This stop is optional if you're boarding in the morning; approximate admission €3–6 and duration about 45 minutes.
Don’t risk missing the boat: check the boarding time and skip the museum if necessary.
10:00
Boarding at Kissamos Port
Arrive at the port early for boarding procedures and follow the operator’s instructions. Bring water, sunscreen, and cash for any purchases or fees not included in the ticket.
11:30
Gramvousa Island
On the island, you can hike up to the remains of the Venetian fortress or stay on the beach, following the time allowed by the excursion. The climb is steep and rocky; allow 30–45 minutes to reach the castle and wear closed shoes.
14:00
Balos Lagoon and return
Spend the main stop at the lagoon: the shallow water and turquoise shades are ideal for swimming, but natural shade is limited. Respect the protected environment, take your rubbish with you, and return to the boat at the scheduled time; the return to Kissamos is usually in the afternoon, followed by the transfer back to Platanias.
Reach Elafonissi by crossing the western inland area and stopping at points of interest along the way.
07:30
Departure from Platanias
For this day, a car is recommended: the drive to Elafonissi takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes–2 hours without stops, on winding mountain roads. Fill up before leaving and drive carefully, especially on narrow stretches.
09:15
Topolia Gorge
Drive through Topolia Gorge and stop only in safe pull-off areas to take in the rocky walls and the inland scenery. Passing through by car is free; avoid unscheduled stops on the roadway.
09:45
Cave of Agia Sofia
Reach the cave via a short climb of steps from the road and admire the limestone formations and the small chapel inside. The visit takes about 30–45 minutes; bring suitable shoes and a few coins for any services or local contributions.
11:30
Chryssoskalitissa Monastery
Stop at the monastery perched on a rocky spur to visit the complex and enjoy the view over the coast. Allow about 30–45 minutes and an indicative entry fee of €2–5; check access conditions and dress respectfully.
12:30
Elafonissi Beach
Spend the afternoon between the main beach, the dunes, and the shallow lagoon waters, without stepping on protected areas. Parking, sunbeds, and umbrellas may be subject to payment or availability: budget around €5–15 for parking and €10–20 for a set, as indicative estimates.
Set off with water and snacks: services can be crowded in high season.
Discover the inland area near Chania with a scenic drive, a botanical garden, and a walk by the lake.
09:00
Departure for Therisso
Reach the village of Therisso from Platanias in about 40–50 minutes, preferably by car. The road crosses a scenic gorge: drive slowly and use only the designated pull-offs to stop.
10:00
Therisso Gorge
Drive along the most scenic stretch of the gorge and stop at safe spots to take in the cliffs and vegetation. There is no entrance fee, but the condition and width of the road require caution, especially if you meet buses or large vehicles.
11:30
Stop in the village of Therisso
Stroll through the small center and take a break at a taverna to taste local cheeses or an early lunch. A simple meal costs roughly €15–25 per person; in high season, it’s a good idea to book ahead or arrive before peak hours.
13:30
Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete
Spend about 2–3 hours on the trails among Mediterranean plants, fruit trees, and shaded areas, with some elevation changes that make comfortable shoes useful. Admission is roughly €8–12; check the schedule and opening hours, as they may change with the season.
A stop at the park restaurant is possible, but check the available services in advance.
17:00
Lake Agia
Finish with a peaceful walk near the lake, a bird habitat and protected wetland area. Outdoor access is free; bring binoculars if you want to observe the birdlife and return to Platanias in about 20–30 minutes.
Wrap up the trip with two different landscapes of the Akrotiri peninsula, planning the stops around the sea and safety.
08:00
Departure for Seitan Limania
Drive to the eastern coast of Akrotiri, allowing about 45–60 minutes from Platanias. Access to the cove is steep and parking is limited: bring light hiking shoes and do not attempt the descent if the ground is slippery or the sea is rough.
09:00
Seitan Limania
Go down to the beach via the path and only stop for a swim if sea conditions are favorable. There are no reliable facilities at the cove: bring water and sunscreen, and take all your trash back with you.
12:00
Lunch and transfer to Marathi
After heading back up the trail, drive to Marathi, allowing about 25–35 minutes. Have lunch at a seaside taverna with fish or mezé; for a full meal, expect roughly €20–35 per person.
14:00
Marathi Beach
The sheltered bay of Marathi is ideal for a more comfortable swim stop, with generally calm waters and nearby facilities. Sun loungers, umbrellas, and parking vary depending on the beach club and season; as a rough guide, allow €10–20 for a set.
16:30
Walk along the waterfront and return
