THE PLACES THAT TELL PLATANIAS

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

The town’s main beach is a long stretch of sand and pebbles washed by clear waters. It’s ideal for swimming and relaxing, with services and tavernas nearby.

This underground shelter, carved out during World War II, tells an intense chapter of local history. It is located in the area of the old village, on the slope above the coast.

The church stands at the highest point of the old village and offers an intimate atmosphere and panoramic views over the coast. It’s a pleasant stop during a walk through the hillside lanes.

East of Platanias, this beach combines light sand, inviting sea, and numerous places to eat and drink. It is also one of the most convenient bases for boat excursions to the offshore islands.

, west of Platanias, offers a generally quieter atmosphere and plenty of open space along the shoreline. The coast here is also important for the nesting of Caretta caretta sea turtles.

This small protected archipelago offshore is known for its wild landscapes and the presence of the Cretan kri-kri goat. Boat trips allow you to admire the islands from the sea and, on authorized excursions, reach some of their areas.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Platanias is easy to explore on foot, although some streets are steep and the pavements can be narrow or uneven. KTEL buses connect the resort to Chania and other parts of the coast; in summer the services run more frequently, but it’s worth checking the updated timetables. To visit beaches and inland villages, a rental car offers greater freedom. In high season, parking near the seafront can be limited, so it’s best to arrive early or leave the car a little farther away.

When to go

From May to June and from September to early October, you’ll find pleasant temperatures, warm sea water, and a less crowded atmosphere than in high season. July and August are the hottest and liveliest months, but also the busiest and often the most expensive. In spring and autumn, some services may have reduced hours; for swimming, check sea conditions and follow the guidance on the beaches.

Where to eat

In Platanias, you’ll find Cretan tavernas, seafront restaurants, and casual spots, with menus that often include fish, grilled meats, salads, and dishes made with local ingredients. For a traditional meal, look for specialties such as dakos, kalitsounia, and lamb, accompanied by olive oil and Cretan wines. The most popular places can fill up in high season: if you want to dine at a busy time, it’s wise to book ahead.

Quick tips

  1. Wear comfortable shoes and watch out for stretches without sidewalks, especially along the busier roads.
  2. In summer, protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunscreen, and water, even on short walks.
  3. Check bus times before you set off: they can vary depending on the season and day of the week.
  4. If you rent a car, check parking conditions at your accommodation in advance and drive carefully on the narrow inland roads.
