Piraeus Municipal Theater

An elegant neoclassical building and a symbol of the city, it dominates the centrally located Korai Square. Even a stroll around the area lets you appreciate its lively urban atmosphere.

This picturesque small harbor is surrounded by boats, taverns, and restaurants overlooking the water. It is one of the most pleasant areas of Piraeus for a walk or a seafood dinner.

Zeas Marina

Also known as Pasalimani, this marina is lively with yachts, cafés, and waterfront venues. The walk around the harbor offers beautiful views over the Saronic Gulf.

Hellenic Maritime Museum

Located at Zeas Marina, it traces the long Greek naval history through models, instruments, and documents. It is an interesting stop for discovering the deep connection between Piraeus and the sea.

A hillside neighborhood with distinctive streets and beautiful sea views, invites you to explore Piraeus at a leisurely pace. From its viewpoints, you can take in the coastline and the port.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The metro is a convenient way to reach the center of Athens: Line 1 connects Piraeus to Monastiraki and Omonia, while Line 3 also goes to the airport. Buses and trolleybuses serve the various neighborhoods, but they can be affected by traffic. To move between the port and areas such as or Pasalimani, you can use taxis or buses. If you need to board, check the gate number in advance: the port is very large and the distances between piers can be considerable. Check transport schedules and fares on official channels, especially in the evening and on public holidays.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are pleasant times to visit Piraeus, with generally mild temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. In July and August, the heat can be intense and the port is especially lively due to the flow of passengers heading to the islands. Winter is quieter, but some activities and connections may have reduced schedules.

Where to eat

To taste fish and Greek cuisine, look for tavernas along the waterfront of and around Pasalimani; more casual spots can also be found in the alleys of the center. The port offers quick options, handy before a ferry, but prices and quality vary: check the displayed menu and ask the cost of fish sold by weight. For a quieter meal, move away from the busiest boarding areas.

Quick tips

  1. For ferries, check the gate and arrive at the port well in advance: the assigned pier may be far from the station.
  2. During rush hour, consider the metro instead of a taxi to get to central Athens.
  3. In summer, bring water, sunscreen, and a hat: shade on the piers can be limited.
  4. Before ordering fresh fish, ask the price per kilo and check whether cover charge or bread are included in the bill.
