This itinerary alternates the everyday character of the towns of Gastouni and Tragano with the sandy beaches of the Vartholomio coast, saving the final day for the area’s main historic sites. The most practical base is Gastouni or Vartholomio, with a car available: public transport links are limited and the distances, though short, are best covered independently. The coastal stops are intentionally flexible, because wind and sea conditions can change the experience. The program includes two excursions nearby, to ancient Elis and Chlemoutsi, to check in advance for opening times and seasonal hours.
Day 1 · Walking · 23.1 km · 271 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Get to know the inland towns and find your way between the agricultural plain and the river.
09:30
Walk through the center of Gastouni
Spend about an hour exploring the central streets and squares, watching the daily rhythm of a farming town in Elis. It’s a good first stop for breakfast and to buy water or snacks before setting off; estimated spend 3–7 €.
Park on side streets and check for any local restrictions.
11:00
Church of Agios Nikolaos
Walk to the Church of Saint Nicholas and visit the accessible areas with respect for religious services. There is not necessarily a continuous tourist schedule for the interior; allow 20–30 minutes and leave a voluntary donation if you wish.
Modest clothing and check on site whether the church is open.
12:00
Lunch in Gastouni
Stop at a tavern in the center for a simple meal of Greek dishes, seasonal vegetables, and local products. Allow about an hour and an estimated budget of €12–22 per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.
Ask for the daily specials: the selection may vary depending on the season.
14:00
Tragano
Reach Tragano in about 20–25 minutes by car and take a walk through the village center, among quiet streets and views of the surrounding countryside. The visit is informal and free, ideal for a 45–60 minute break before heading back toward the river.
This is not a place with a structured monument circuit: think of this stop as a village visit.
16:00
Pineios River landscape
Continue by car to an accessible spot along the river and take time to look over the plain, the riparian vegetation, and the waterway. The stop is free and can last an hour; choose only public access points and do not go near unstable banks or fenced agricultural areas.
Access conditions and ground conditions may change after rain or works.
19:00
Return and dinner in Gastouni
Head back to your base at a relaxed pace, allowing about 20–30 minutes of driving depending on your river stop. For dinner, choose a tavern in the center: estimate €15–28 per person for a full meal, with prices and availability varying.
If you are driving after dinner, agree in advance on a driver who will not drink alcohol.
Explore the center of Vartholomio and spend the afternoon among the sandy beaches along the coast.
09:00
Vartholomio
Spend the morning in the center of Vartholomio, strolling through the shopping streets and stopping for a coffee. The coast can be reached from the town in just a few minutes by car; breakfast costs around 3–7 €.
Stock up on water and sunscreen before heading to the sea.
10:30
Glyfa Beach
Reach Glyfa Beach in about 10–15 minutes by car and choose a stretch of beach suited to the sea conditions. Allow at least two hours to swim and relax; beach access is generally free, while any sunbeds and umbrellas may cost around 8–20 € for a set.
The availability of facilities and whether they are operating depends on the season.
13:00
Lunch near the coast
Have lunch at a tavern in the coastal area or prepare a picnic bought in town. A simple meal can cost around 12–25 € per person; leave the beach clean and do not leave any trash behind, especially on the less equipped stretches.
In high season, it is wise to ask about table availability or arrive before peak times.
15:00
Thines Beach
Head to Thines Beach, allowing about 10–15 minutes by car, and walk along the shoreline before choosing where to stop. The beach is suitable for a longer stay; entry is usually free and the availability of facilities can vary from one stretch to another.
Check the wind and waves before getting in the water: the sea can be rough even on sunny days.
18:30
Return to Vartholomio and evening
Head back to town for a shower and an evening stroll, without planning any further long transfers. For dinner, budget 15–28 € per person; any ice cream or drink after dinner adds around 3–7 €.
In summer the sunset comes late, but it is best to leave the beach before dark.
Delve into the history of Elis with an archaeological visit and a scenic stop at the castle.
08:30
Depart for ancient Elis
Set off early from Gastouni or Vartholomio: the drive to the archaeological site usually takes about 25–35 minutes by car. Bring water, a hat, and shoes suitable for trails; self-driving has no extra cost, while fuel depends on the overall route.
Before setting off, check the official opening hours for the site and museum, as they may change throughout the year.
09:15
Archaeological Site of Elis
Spend about 90 minutes at the archaeological area, taking in the urban remains and the relationship between the ancient settlement and the plain landscape. Accessibility and the extent of the visitable areas may vary; budget an indicative 0–10 € ticket and check updated prices before your visit.
In summer, avoid the hottest hours: shade on the site can be limited.
11:00
Archaeological Museum of Elis
Visit the museum to add context to the finds and evidence linked to the ancient city; allow about 45–60 minutes. Entry may be free or subject to a fee depending on current regulations, so plan for roughly 0–10 € and check opening times and ticketing in advance.
If the museum is closed, use the time to complete the outdoor visit without forcing the schedule.
12:30
Lunch along the way
Take a break at a taverna in the Elis area or along the road to Chlemoutsi, choosing the place according to opening hours. Budget about 12–25 € per person and allow at least an hour for lunch before getting back on the road.
Restaurants outside the larger towns can be inconsistent: don’t set off without water and a snack.
14:30
Chlemoutsi Castle
Reach the castle in about 35–45 minutes by car and visit the walls, courtyards, and accessible areas, allowing at least 90 minutes for the stop. The location offers wide views over the plain and the sea; expect an approximate admission of 0–10 €, to be checked according to the season and access rules.
The climb and uneven surfaces require comfortable shoes; check the opening hours before you set off.
16:45
Stop in Loutra Kyllinis
Wrap up with a short detour to Loutra Kyllinis, about 10–15 minutes from the castle, for a stroll through the town and a relaxing break. Access to public spaces is free; any thermal facilities or wellness services may have different rates and seasonal opening times, so check directly before relying on them.
Don’t confuse a walk around the town with access to thermal facilities, which may require a reservation or ticket.
