Day 1 – Cave, monastery and Chora

09:00–20:00 Walking visits and relaxed breaks

Discover Patmos’s main historic sites, focusing on the compact area of Chora.

09:00

Apocalypse Cave

From Skala, the area can be reached in about 10 minutes by taxi or bus, depending on the available connections; from the stop, there is a short walk remaining. Allow about 45–60 minutes for the visit and take in the cave, the niches in the rock, and the devotional features; consider an indicative cost of 0–5 € for any entrance fee or contribution, to be checked on the official website.

Respectful clothing and comfortable shoes are useful for places of worship and uphill stretches.

10:30

Monastery of Saint John the Theologian

From the cave, continue on foot to the monastery, with an uphill walk of about 10–15 minutes. Allow 1–1,5 hours to appreciate the fortified complex, courtyards, and views over the rooftops of Chora; any entrance fee or museum visit may cost approximately 0–10 €, to be checked on the official website before you go.

Check in advance for any dress code and access conditions.

13:00

Chora and its narrow lanes

Explore the historic village on foot for about 2 hours, following the paved paths between whitewashed houses, gateways, and small squares. Include a lunch break in a taverna: for a simple meal, expect around 12–25 € per person, depending on your choice and the season.

The lanes are partly steep and uneven; bring water and sun protection.

17:30

Patmos windmills

Reach the windmills with a walk of about 10–15 minutes from the center of Chora and stop for 45–60 minutes. Admire the restored structures and the view over the coast and the harbor; the exterior visit may be free, while any interior access or events may involve costs to be checked locally.

The late-afternoon light is ideal for photos; bring a light jacket if it’s windy.

Day 2 – Grikos Bay and Kalikatsou

10:00–17:30 Beach, with short walks

Enjoy the scenery of Grikos Bay, alternating between the beach and a walk to the Kalikatsou rock.

10:00

Grikos Beach

From Skala or Chora, reach Grikos in about 10–15 minutes by taxi or with a local connection, if available; alternatively, consider a scooter or a rental car. Spend 2–3 hours at the bay, between swimming and relaxing: beach access is generally free, while sun loungers, umbrellas, and refreshments may add up to around 10–30 € per couple.

Bring water and check on site for the availability of services and connections.

14:00

Kalikatsou Rock

From the beach, continue on foot for about 10–20 minutes, following the coastal path toward the distinctive rock formation. Allow 45–75 minutes to take in its profile and relationship with the sea; the walk normally does not require a ticket, but avoid climbing on exposed or slippery surfaces.

After your visit, you can return to Grikos for a lunch break or a swim, allowing around 12–25 € for a simple meal.

Day 3 – The northern beaches

09:30–17:30 Relaxed, with short transfers

End the stay with a day by the sea between Agriolivadi and Kampos beaches.

09:30

Agriolivadi Beach

From Skala, reach Agriolivadi in about 10 minutes by taxi or rental vehicle; check locally for any buses and their frequency. Plan 2–3 hours to swim and relax in the bay; beach access is generally free, while any equipment rental may cost roughly 10–30 € per couple.

Wind conditions can affect how comfortable swimming is: check them before going into the water.

13:30

Kampos Beach

Continue to Kampos in about 10–15 minutes by taxi or rental vehicle, or check whether the local connection allows the transfer. Set aside 2–3 hours for the beach and a lunch break nearby: allow around 12–25 € for a simple meal and check on site the cost of any sun loungers or services.

  • Check local schedules and transport frequency on site: for the more remote beaches, it may be useful to book a taxi or rent a vehicle.
  • Bring shoes with grippy soles for uphill alleys, coastal paths, and uneven ground.
  • In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; check the wind and sea conditions before planning swims or longer stops.
