According to tradition, this is where Saint John received the visions later transcribed in the Apocalypse. The cave, intimate and atmospheric, is one of the island’s main pilgrimage sites.
The historic village winds through a maze of narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, and flower-filled courtyards at the foot of the monastery. Wandering its little streets reveals the island’s most authentic character.

This sheltered bay is prized for its calm waters and landscape dotted with small coves. Nearby lies Petra, a large rock formation rising out of the sea.
Reachable on foot via a scenic trail, this sandy beach is surrounded by hills and offers a secluded atmosphere. It is an ideal destination for those seeking clear water and peace and quiet.

Patmos has no airport: it can be reached by ferry, especially from Piraeus and other Dodecanese islands. The main port is , where buses depart for Chora and some beaches, with more frequent services in high season. To explore coves and less-served areas, you can rent a car, scooter or quad, or use taxis. The roads are sometimes narrow and winding, so it is best to drive carefully. Chora is best explored on foot, keeping in mind the uphill climbs and uneven paving.
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is generally pleasant, the sea is inviting, and the island is less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August bring hot days and a wider choice of connections and services, but also more visitors: it is advisable to book ferries and accommodation in advance. In spring and autumn, some services may have reduced schedules.
In and Chora you will find tavernas and venues where you can sample Greek cuisine, fish and traditional Dodecanese dishes. For a quieter meal, look for a taverna in the villages or near the beaches, checking opening days and hours in advance outside the season. Daily menus and the available catch can vary: asking the staff for advice is often the best way to choose.
