3 days / 2 nights · History, villages, lagoons, beaches
This itinerary explores Southern Corfu from north to south, alternating monuments, stops in villages, and time by the sea. The first day is dedicated to the Achilleion and Benitses area, while the second focuses on the Korission Lagoon and the beaches of the southwest coast. The last day reaches Lefkimmi and the southern stretch of the island, with a visit to the area around Kavos. A rental car makes getting around easier, especially for beaches less served by public transport.
Day 1 · Walking · 11.7 km · 143 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the historic heritage of the southeastern coast and end the day between the harbor and the seafront of Benitses.
09:00
Departure and transfer to Gastouri
Reach Gastouri by car or taxi: from Corfu town center the drive usually takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you arrive by bus, check the route and timetable for Achilleion in advance, as frequencies and connections can vary by season.
Parking and connections can be busier during the middle of the day.
10:00
Achilleion Palace
Spend about 1–2 hours at the palace commissioned by Empress Elisabeth of Austria and in its gardens, pausing to admire the statues and the sea views. Approximate admission: around 5–15 €; accessibility and areas open to visitors may depend on works or temporary arrangements.
Check opening hours and visiting arrangements before you go.
12:15
Kaiser's Bridge
Head down toward the coast to see the bridge associated with the imperial residence and the stretch of sea below. The stop is short, about 20–30 minutes: this is mainly a scenic viewpoint rather than a museum-style attraction.
Be careful of traffic along the road and do not stop in the carriageway.
13:00
Lunch in Benitses
Reach Benitses in about 10 minutes and have lunch in the harbor area or along the seafront, where you’ll find fish tavernas and Corfiot cuisine. Budget roughly 15–30 € per person for a simple or mid-range meal, drinks excluded.
Ask for the price of fresh fish by weight before ordering.
14:30
Stroll through the center of Benitses
Explore the small harbor and the village streets on foot, noticing the contrast between traditional houses and the tourist facilities along the coast. Allow about an hour, with a break for a coffee or a local sweet for around 3–7 €.
The inland streets are quieter than the seafront.
16:30
Moraitika Beach
Continue south for about 15–20 minutes and spend the afternoon on Moraitika Beach, with both organized sections and free areas. Sunbed and umbrella rental: typically €10–25 for a set, depending on the beach club and the season.
Bring water shoes if you prefer walking on the pebbly stretches.
19:00
Dinner and return
Have dinner in Moraitika or head back to Benitses, choosing a taverna and tasting local dishes such as pastitsada or sofrito. Allow around €18–35 per person for dinner; for the drive back, factor in time and parking before evening.
If you’re driving, avoid drinking alcohol.
Explore the lagoon ecosystem and alternate between the dunes and the open beaches of Chalikounas and Issos.
08:30
Departure for the southwestern coast
From Moraitika or Benitses, reach the Korission area in about 30–45 minutes by car, depending on your starting point. For this day, a car is especially useful: public transport connections to the lagoon access points and beaches are limited.
Refuel and bring water before leaving the towns.
09:30
Korission Lagoon
Spend about an hour at the lagoon, a protected wetland separated from the sea by a sandbar. Admire the landscape and the birds without approaching the nests or leaving the trails; visiting the natural area is generally free.
A pair of binoculars is useful for birdwatching; in summer bring sun protection.
11:00
Chalikounas Beach
Head to Chalikounas Beach, known for its long stretch of sand and its quiet, largely undeveloped natural setting. You can stroll along the shore or stop for a swim: allow about two hours and keep in mind that facilities are less concentrated than in tourist resorts.
Check the wind and sea conditions before swimming.
13:15
Packed lunch or a taverna nearby
Take a break with a packed lunch, or head to a nearby village to find a taverna. Budget about 8–15 € for a simple packed meal bought in shops, or 15–30 € for a sit-down meal.
Do not leave litter on the beach or in the protected area.
14:45
Issos Beach
Continue to Issos, famous for its sandy shore and the dunes that define this stretch of coast. Spend the afternoon swimming and walking, staying on the permitted paths so as not to damage the dune vegetation.
The sun and wind can be intense: bring water and a hat.
17:30
Scenic stop and return
Before setting off again, stop at a safe viewpoint to take in the lagoon expanse and the coastal landscape, without turning onto tracks unsuitable for the vehicle. The return to Moraitika takes roughly 30–45 minutes; an informal dinner near your accommodation costs about 15–30 € per person.
Avoid driving on sandy tracks and check the condition of the rental vehicle.
Get to know the town of Lefkimmi and head to the beaches in the south, leaving time for a stop in Kavos before heading back.
09:00
Transfer to Lefkimmi
Set off with your luggage already sorted: the drive from Moraitika to Lefkimmi usually takes about 30–40 minutes. Intercity buses can be an option, but check the schedule for the day and keep in mind that they do not conveniently serve all the planned beaches.
If you need to return the car, confirm the place and time in advance.
10:00
Walk around Lefkimmi
Explore the center and the streets along the canal, taking in the town’s more everyday character compared with the seaside resorts. Set aside about 1–1.5 hours and stop for a coffee or a late breakfast, with an indicative cost of 3–8 €.
The center is easy to visit on foot; park without obstructing the local streets.
11:45
Bouka Beach
Head to Bouka Beach, near the river mouth and the port, for a short walk along the shoreline. Spend about an hour here and check on site for facilities and sea conditions, which can change depending on the season.
Don’t assume there will be sunbeds or refreshment spots outside the high season.
13:00
Lunch in Lefkimmi
Head back to town or stop at a taverna along the way for a relaxed lunch of Greek cuisine. Indicative budget: 15–30 € per person, depending on fish, drinks, and the venue you choose.
In high season, it may be useful to book ahead.
14:30
Arkoudilas Beach
Continue south and reach Arkoudilas Beach, a wilder stretch of coast framed by natural cliffs. Allow at least 1.5–2 hours for access, swimming, and a break; the final stretch may require caution and a short walk.
Wear suitable shoes and check trail conditions; avoid descending during the hottest hours.
17:00
Kavos
End your exploration in Kavos, a lively resort town with shops, bars and a waterfront promenade that’s especially busy in summer. A walk of about an hour lets you see the contrast with the villages visited in previous days; coffee and drinks typically cost around €3–8.
The area can be noisy and very lively during peak season.
18:30
Departure and return
Head back to your accommodation or continue on to the port and airport, allowing plenty of time for traffic and vehicle drop-off. From Kavos, the trip to Corfu Airport takes roughly 50–70 minutes by car, but it can take longer during peak times.
Check the departure time of your flight or ferry before setting your final visit.
