Southern Corfu (Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece) in 1 day – Complete itinerary

1 day / 0 nights · Villages, lagoon, beaches, nature

The day explores the southern part of Corfu, alternating everyday life in Lefkimmi with the beaches and protected landscapes of Korission Lagoon. The order of the stops keeps transfers to a minimum: start from the center and the nearby shoreline, then head to the southwest coast. A car is the most practical option, because public transport connections to the beaches can be infrequent and seasonal. Swimming breaks and walks should be adjusted according to the wind, the heat, and the time of sunset.

Day 1

Lefkimmi and the Korission Lagoon coast

09:00–19:30 Easy walks and beach stops

Discover the character of southern Corfu and alternate a local village with beaches and lagoon scenery.

09:00

Walk in the center of Lefkimmi

Spend about an hour wandering the streets of the center, admiring the traditional houses, small shops, and the relaxed pace of the island’s main town in the south. Stop for a coffee or a simple breakfast at a kafeneio: expect around 3–7 EUR per person. Park in one of the permitted areas on the edge of the center and continue on foot.

In the morning, shops and cafés are livelier; bring cash for small purchases.

10:15

Stop at Bouka Beach

Reach Bouka Beach in just a few minutes by car from Lefkimmi and enjoy a walk along the shore, taking in the coastline and the port area. Allow about an hour; beach access is generally free, while any sunbeds and an umbrella may cost roughly 10–25 EUR for two people, depending on the season and the operator. Conditions and available services change throughout the year.

Bring water and sunscreen: outside the high season, some services may not be operating.

11:45

Transfer to Korission Lagoon

Head back by car and follow the road toward the southwest coast, allowing about 25–35 minutes depending on traffic and the access point you choose. Local roads can be narrow: drive carefully and do not take sandy tracks with a regular car. No tickets are required to reach the lagoon’s public areas.

Set your navigation to Lake Korission and check that the final stretch is suitable for your vehicle.

12:30

Scenery and birdwatching at Lake Korission

Spend about 45–60 minutes observing the lagoon and its wetland habitat, which is important for birds and separated from the sea by sandbars. Stay on the accessible paths and do not approach nesting areas; visiting the natural areas is free. On a clear day, the contrast between water, dunes, and vegetation is one of the most distinctive features of the south of the island.

Bring binoculars if you’re interested in birdwatching, and do not leave any litter in the protected area.

13:30

Lunch in the Agios Georgios area

Take a break at a taverna in the nearby village of Agios Georgios Argyradon, reachable in about 10–15 minutes by car, or choose a packed lunch if you prefer to stay close to the coast. For a simple meal at a taverna, budget roughly 15–30 EUR per person, drinks excluded or included depending on your choice. In high season, it’s wise to check opening hours and book ahead during busy times.

Ask for the dish of the day and check for any extra charges before ordering.

15:00

Swimming and a walk at Issos Beach

Head to Issos Beach and allow at least an hour and a half for swimming, a walk on the sand, and taking in the dunes. The beach is wide and access is generally free; sunbeds, umbrellas, and parking, if available, have variable rates, often in the range of 5–25 EUR in total. The wind can be strong and the sea rough: assess the conditions before going into the water.

Wear footwear suitable for hot sand and respect the dune areas, which are fragile.

17:15

Final stop on the coast at Halikounas Beach

Drive to Halikounas Beach in about 10–15 minutes, or consider walking only if you have checked the route and conditions on site. End with a stroll along the shoreline and, if the season’s timing allows, stay for the late-afternoon light over the lagoon and sea. Access is normally free; allow plenty of time for the return, as the roads can be dark and poorly lit.

Sunset times vary a lot throughout the year: check them and don’t rely on a single dirt road for the return trip.

Practical tips

  • To easily connect Lefkimmi, the lagoon, and the beaches, consider a rental car; always check road conditions before taking coastal tracks.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: on the dunes and exposed stretches, shade can be limited.
  • Be careful of the wind and currents before swimming, especially at Issos and Halikounas.
  • Check seasonal opening hours for local businesses and transport: services in the south of the island may be reduced outside summer.
