Discover the village of Kastraki and visit the major monasteries on the northern side of Meteora.
09:00
Walk in Kastraki
Start in the village, among stone houses, narrow lanes, and views of the rocky cliffs. Set aside about 45 minutes for the walk and have breakfast at a local café; a coffee and a brioche cost roughly €4–8.
If you’re staying in Kalambaka, reach Kastraki by car or taxi in about 10 minutes.
10:00
Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas
Reach the monastery by car or taxi and allow about an hour for the visit, including the access steps. Admire the frescoes attributed to Theophanes of Crete and the compact setting of the building on the rock; admission is generally around €3–5.
Check the closing day and bring cash for the ticket.
11:30
Varlaam Monastery
Continue by car for a few minutes to Varlaam, one of the most spectacular and visited complexes. Allow 60–90 minutes to climb the stairs, visit the church and small museum, and take in the views; indicative admission €3–5.
The stairs are exposed to the sun: water and shoes with grippy soles are useful.
13:15
Lunch in Kastraki
Head back to the village for a break of about an hour and a half. In the tavernas, you can order Greek dishes, salads, and local specialties: budget roughly €15–25 per person, drinks not included.
In high season, it’s best to book ahead or have lunch before peak hours.
15:00
Great Meteoron Monastery
Allow at least 90 minutes for the largest and most historic monastery in the complex, founded by Saint Athanasius the Meteorite. The visit includes the church, museum spaces, and sweeping views over the plain; admission costs roughly €3–5.
The climb includes numerous steps; check the closing time before setting off.
18:30
Sunset at the Meteora Observation Deck
Reach the viewpoint along the scenic road to end the day with slanting light on the rocks and monasteries. Arrive early to find a safe place to stop and stay in permitted areas, without lingering in the roadway.
The viewpoint is free; bring a warm layer, because it can get chilly after sunset.
Visit the monasteries on the southern side and round off the day among Kalambaka’s religious heritage and museums.
09:00
Rousanou Monastery
Arrive in the morning, when the walkways and entrances are generally less crowded. The visit takes about 45–60 minutes: take in the convent rooms and the monastery that seems to rise directly from the rock; admission is roughly €3–5.
Opening varies by day and season; check the notices at the entrance.
10:30
Holy Trinity Monastery
Continue by car along the scenic road, then tackle the descent and climb on foot, allowing about 60–90 minutes in total. The route offers sweeping views over the valley and the town; expect an indicative entrance fee of €3–5.
The walk is steep and includes many steps.
12:30
Monastery of St. Stephen
Reach the next complex by car: compared with the other monasteries, access is easier and includes a pedestrian bridge. Set aside about an hour for the church, the accessible monastic areas, and the viewpoints; indicative entrance fee €3–5.
It is a convent for nuns: please respect the silence and the dress code.
14:00
Lunch break in Kalambaka
Head down into town for lunch and a rest before the afternoon visits. At a taverna or bakery, you can spend around €10–22 per person, depending on the meal.
From the monastery area to the center, it takes about 10–15 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
15:30
Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary
Visit the Byzantine church in the historic center of Kalambaka, known for its ancient structure and architectural features from different eras. Allow about 30–45 minutes and check opening hours and any religious services on site.
Admission may be subject to worship hours, and photography indoors is not always allowed.
16:30
Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum
Spend about 60–90 minutes exploring the exhibits on the region's wildlife and the mushroom collection. This is an indoor visit that's also ideal during the hottest hours; the ticket costs roughly €5–10, depending on the option chosen.
Check updated hours and rates, as they may change seasonally.
Explore the landscapes on foot at the foot of the rocks and reach the Ypapanti area, with a flexible route depending on trail conditions.
08:00
Departure from the Kastraki trails
Have breakfast and pack water, sunscreen, and hiking shoes before entering the trail network. The paths are not all paved and can be slippery after rain; a half-day walk requires at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person.
Download an offline map and ask your accommodation which access point is passable on the day of the hike.
09:00
Panagia Doupiani Church
Reach the small church at the foot of the rocks, associated with the area's early monastic communities. Allow about 20–30 minutes for the stop and take in the surrounding landscape, behaving respectfully if the building is open for worship.
Access to the interior may be limited; treat this stop primarily as a historical and scenic one.
09:45
Hike to Ypapanti
Follow the marked trail toward Ypapanti Monastery, set into the rock face. Allow about 2–3 hours for the round trip, including stops, depending on the route and pace; the monastery is not regularly open to visitors inside, so plan the visit for the setting and exterior view.
Do not venture onto unmarked tracks and turn back if the ground is wet or weather conditions worsen.
13:00
Lunch and rest in Kastraki
Return to the village for a hearty lunch and a break after the trek. A dish at a taverna costs roughly €12–22; add water and a drink to replenish fluids.
If you prefer a picnic, buy it before departure and take all your rubbish with you.
15:00
Belvedere and final views of the rocks
Wrap up with a short scenic stop, reaching an accessible point along the Meteora road by car or taxi. Allow about 30–45 minutes for photos and for admiring the monastic complexes you’ve already visited; there are no entrance fees for this scenic stop.
Stop only in designated pull-offs and authorized parking areas.
