It is the largest and oldest of Meteora’s monasteries, founded in the 14th century. The complex includes a frescoed church and a museum that tells the monastic history of the region.

One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
In Meteora, imposing rock pillars rise above the Thessalian plain and shelter monasteries with a unique atmosphere. Between spectacular views, trails, and places of deep spirituality, every visit offers unforgettable sights.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Perched on a high pinnacle, impresses with its scenic setting and the church’s frescoes. From the terrace, sweeping views open over the surrounding rock formations.
This monastery, dedicated to Saint Barbara, stands on a lower rock and seems almost set into the landscape. Its elegant profile is especially striking from the panoramic viewpoints along the road.
Its isolated location, atop a steep pinnacle, is among the most famous images of Meteora. To reach it, you have to tackle a stairway carved into the rock, rewarded by splendid views.
Connected to the road by a bridge, the monastery offers relatively easy access and open views over the plain. The church preserves decorations and icons of great interest.
Built on a narrow rock formation, it stands out for its multi-level structure. Inside, you can admire Renaissance frescoes attributed to the Cretan painter Theophanes.

How to get around
Kalambaka and Kastraki are the most convenient bases for visiting Meteora. A car or scooter makes it easier to move between the monasteries and viewpoints with greater freedom; in high season, it’s wise to factor in traffic and limited parking. Local buses and organized tours are available during some periods, but schedules and frequencies can vary: check them before you set off. On foot, you can follow scenic trails, but some are demanding and the roads are not always suitable for pedestrians.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for milder temperatures and pleasant walks. Summer brings long days, but it can be very hot and crowded, especially at midday; in winter the landscape is striking, but cold, rain, or snow can make getting around more difficult. Monastery opening times and closing days change: check the latest information for each one before visiting.
Where to eat
In Kalambaka and Kastraki you’ll find tavernas and restaurants, convenient after visiting the monasteries. Look for Thessalian specialties on the menu, such as savory pies, local cheeses, and grilled dishes, along with traditional Greek recipes. In high season, it can be useful to book dinner in advance, especially at the most popular places. For a break during hikes, bring water and a snack: refreshment options are limited near the trails.
Quick tips
- 01To enter the monasteries, wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees; some provide coverings at the entrance, but this is not guaranteed.
- 02Check each monastery’s opening hours, closing days, and access rules in advance: they are not the same for all and may change with the season.
- 03Bring comfortable, non-slip shoes: there are steps and uphill sections to reach the entrances.
- 04To photograph the view, stop only at permitted points and do not stand on the road: the roads are narrow and busy.
Wake up in the right place.
