Walk along the Ammoudara seafront

Start from the long beach of Ammoudara, easily reached by car or by city buses from Heraklion. Set aside about an hour for the walk and choose a serviced stretch for swimming; beach access is free.

In summer, the sun is already intense by mid-morning: bring water and sunscreen.

Check the flags and sea conditions before swimming.

12:30

Almiros Mouth

Head toward the mouth of the Almiros River to observe the wetland environment and riparian vegetation. It’s a short, free stop; stay on the accessible paths and do not enter sensitive areas.

The mouth is not a fully equipped swimming area.

13:30

Lunch in the Ammoudara area

Stop at a taverna or a seaside spot: a simple lunch with a main dish and a drink usually costs 12–22 EUR per person. Take a break during the hottest hours before continuing your sightseeing.

Prices vary between beachfront venues and inland streets.

16:30

Pankritio Stadium

Make your way to the stadium, one of the area’s main sports facilities, to admire its architecture from the outside and take a walk around the surroundings. The exterior visit is free; access to events depends on the schedule.

Guided tours inside are not guaranteed.

19:00

Evening in Gazi

Wrap up in the center of Gazi, among cafés, shops, and tavernas also popular with locals. For a casual dinner, expect around 18–30 EUR per person; return to Ammoudara by car or with available local transport.

Check the evening bus schedules in advance.

Day 2 – Agia Pelagia and the coves of the bay

09:00–19:30 Active but flexible, with swimming stops

Explore the nearby beaches of Agia Pelagia, Psaromoura, Mononaftis, Lygaria and Made on foot and by car.

09:00

Agia Pelagia Beach

Arrive early in Agia Pelagia, a compact village built around a sheltered bay. Set aside about two hours for swimming and a stroll along the seafront; access is free, while beach facilities are chargeable.

Parking near the bay can fill up during the busiest hours.

11:15

Psaromoura Beach

Reach Psaromoura with a short walk up and down, or by car, checking on-site for parking availability. This cove is smaller and rockier: bring water shoes and plan for around an hour's stop.

The path can be slippery; avoid flip-flops on the way down.

12:45

Lunch in Agia Pelagia

Head back to the main bay for lunch in a seaside taverna or in the inner streets. A meal with meze and a main course can cost around 15–28 EUR per person.

Booking ahead is useful on peak-season weekends.

14:30

Mononaftis Beach

Continue to Mononaftis, a small pebble beach prized for its clear water. Plan for an hour of swimming and, if you bring a mask, watch the seabed near the rocks without touching the wildlife.

Beach equipment may come with an extra cost.

16:15

Lygaria Beach

In just a few minutes by car you can reach Lygaria, in a sheltered bay where you can stop for a walk and one last swim. Access to the beach is free; sunbeds and umbrellas are available at varying rates.

Leave time to look for parking along the access roads.

18:00

Sunset and stop at Made Beach

End the coastal scouting at Made Beach, with a short stop to relax and take in the coastline. In the evening, head back to Agia Pelagia: dinner at a taverna typically costs 18–32 EUR per person.

The distances are short, but the roads are winding: drive carefully.

09:00–19:30 Cultural and relaxed

Get to know the village of Fodele and its artistic tradition before spending the afternoon on the coast.

09:00

Arrival and walk in Fodele

Reach Fodele from the coast by car, allowing about 20–30 minutes depending on your starting point. Stroll through the village streets and the green valley; visiting the village is free.

A bus may be available from Heraklion, but schedules and connections should be checked.

10:00

El Greco Museum

Visit the small museum dedicated to Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, traditionally associated with Fodele. Allow about 45–60 minutes and check opening days and hours before you go; admission may be charged, with the fee to be checked on site.

Opening hours may vary depending on the season.

11:15

Church of Panagia

Reach the historic Church of Panagia, known for its architecture and Byzantine elements. Set aside a respectful visit of about 20–30 minutes; access may depend on services and opening hours.

Dress appropriately and ask before photographing the interior.

12:15

Lunch in the Fodele valley

Stop at a village taverna to sample Cretan dishes and local products. Plan on roughly 14–25 EUR per person for lunch with a drink.

In summer, it’s best to have lunch before the hottest hours.

15:00

Transfer to Fodele Beach

Drive to the beach by following the road toward the coast, about 10–15 minutes away. Here you can alternate between swimming and relaxing; entry is free, while organized facilities have varying prices.

The coast is exposed: check the wind and sea conditions.

17:30

A slow afternoon by the sea

Wrap up with a walk on the beach and a drink at a nearby spot. For a snack or coffee, allow 4–10 EUR; head back while there is still enough daylight if you’re driving on inland roads.

Bring cash for small businesses, and do not assume cards are accepted.

Day 4 – Tylissos and the Krousonas hills

08:30–19:00 Cultural, with inland transfers

Combine Minoan archaeology, rural landscapes, and a visit to a monastery in the Malevizi hinterland.

08:30

Voulismeno Aloni

Stop at the great natural depression known as Voulismeno Aloni, in a rural landscape north of Tylissos. The visit is outdoors and free; do not approach the unstable edges and do not go down if the ground is slippery.

Wear closed-toe shoes and check local accessibility before setting off.

10:00

Tylissos Archaeological Site

Set aside about an hour for the archaeological site of Tylissos, with the remains of ancient Minoan residences. The visit is outdoors; admission and opening hours may change, so check official information before you travel.

Bring water and a hat: the area offers little shade.

11:30

Stop in the village of Tylissos

Stroll through the village and take a break at a local café. It is a short stop with no entry fee; for a coffee and a snack, expect 4–9 EUR.

Services may be limited outside meal times.

Mountain roads take longer than the map distance suggests.

15:00

09:00–19:30 Scenic, with short stops

Discover the hilly side of Rogdia and combine a visit to the monastery with two nearby beaches.

09:00

Savathianon Monastery

Set out in the morning for Savathianon Monastery, nestled in the hilly landscape. Allow about 45–60 minutes to visit the permitted areas; access and opening hours depend on the religious community’s activities.

Check opening in advance and dress respectfully.

10:30

Rogdia

Continue to the village of Rogdia to wander among the houses and enjoy the views over the coast. The stop is free and takes about an hour; the roads are narrow, so it’s best to park without blocking the way.

A car is especially useful for connecting the stops of the day.

12:00

Coffee and views in Rogdia

Stop at a café or taverna in the village for a break before heading down to the sea. Budget 4–10 EUR for a drink or 15–28 EUR for a light meal.

Opening hours may be reduced on quieter days.

Explore Minoan civilization and the historic center of the capital, just a short distance from Malevizi.

08:00

Transfer to Knossos

Set off early by car or bus from Heraklion to Knossos, outside the municipality of Malevizi but easy to visit in a day. Allow about 20–30 minutes by car from the center and check admission fees in advance, as they can vary.

Arriving at opening time helps reduce heat and crowds.

09:00

Knossos Palace

Spend at least two hours at the main Minoan palace complex, taking in the courtyards, reconstructed frescoes, and visitor routes. Admission is ticketed and opening hours vary by season; check the official information before your visit.

Comfortable shoes and a hat are essential in the archaeological area.

11:30

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Head back into the city to visit the museum, which houses key artifacts from Knossos and other Cretan sites. Allow about two hours and check the latest admission prices and opening hours; entry is ticketed.

If available, check whether combined tickets with Knossos exist.

14:00

Lunch in the historic center

Choose a taverna in the streets around the center to sample Cretan dishes. A full lunch usually costs 15–28 EUR per person; leave some time to reach the next stops on foot.

The central streets are easier to explore on foot than by car.

15:30

The area is very busy during the middle of the day.

08:00–17:30 Active, to be adapted to trail conditions

End the trip with a day in nature between the village of Sarchos and its gorge.

08:00

Transfer to Sarchos

Reach Sarchos by car, allowing about 40–55 minutes from Ammoudara depending on traffic and road conditions. Bring water, snacks, and an offline map: public transport to the inland areas can be infrequent.

Do not start a hike if the weather is unstable or the trail is closed.

09:00

Walk through the village of Sarchos

Explore the small center and ask locals for information about the gorge trail conditions. The walk is free and gives you a chance to buy water or a snack before setting off.

Do not rely on shops being open outside normal hours.

10:00

Hike in Sarchos Gorge

Follow the trail only if conditions are safe and the route is open; duration and difficulty depend on the section chosen and the season. The hike is generally free, but it requires trekking shoes and plenty of water.

Avoid the gorge floor after rain or when there is a risk of flash floods; do not venture out alone on challenging sections.

13:00

Lunch and recovery in Sarchos

Return to the village for lunch and a break after the walk. Allow 14–25 EUR per person for a taverna meal; alternatively, bring a packed lunch if the local places are not open.

Plan a shady break during the hottest hours.

14:30

Scenic return toward Malevizi

Keep in mind the time needed to return the car or reach your accommodation.
