How to get around
Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a movable bridge, so you can get there by car without taking a ferry; the nearest airport is Aktion, near Preveza. To explore the island freely, especially the beaches on the west coast, it’s useful to rent a car or a scooter. The roads to some beaches are narrow and winding, so it’s best to drive carefully and allow extra time. Buses connect the main towns, but services can be infrequent, especially outside the high season. In summer, boat excursions also depart, a practical way to reach coves and nearby islands.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting Lefkada, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds; the sea is generally warmer from June to September. July and August offer long beach days, but they are the busiest and hottest months. On the west coast, wind and waves can make the sea rough, so it’s a good idea to check conditions before going for a swim.
Where to eat
In Lefkada Town and the coastal villages, you’ll find tavernas serving fish, grilled dishes, seasonal vegetables, and typical Greek specialties. Local delicacies include Eglouvi lentils, the island’s salami and wine, as well as traditional sweets. In the inland villages, the atmosphere is often more relaxed and the menus highlight local ingredients; in high season, it’s advisable to book dinner at the most popular places.
